Police in Zanzibar have withheld Joe McCann’s passport and are continuing to question him following the death of lifestyle influencer Ashlee Jenae, even as authorities insist he has not been arrested and is being treated only as a witness.

According to a statement released on Tuesday, April 14, by the Tanzania Police Force, and obtained by People, McCann remains in Zanzibar while investigators examine the circumstances surrounding the death of Ashlee Jenae, whose legal name was Ashly Robinson.

Zuberi Chembela, Zanzibar’s deputy commissioner of police and deputy director of criminal investigations, confirmed that McCann is still being interviewed and that the investigation remains active.

The development comes just days after local authorities publicly stated they believed Robinson died by suicide. Police have said Robinson and McCann got into an argument while staying at the Zuri Zanzibar resort, prompting hotel staff to move them into separate rooms.

According to police, Robinson was later found unresponsive in her room and taken to a hospital, where she died the following day.

McCann’s passport has now been confiscated while authorities continue to review what happened. Police are speaking with him as a witness, and no charges have been filed.

A statement posted by the North Unguja Regional Police said McCann “continues to be questioned by the Police Force and his travel document has been withheld.”

Robinson’s family has continued to challenge the early public narrative surrounding her death. Her mother, Yolanda Denise Endres, said that Robinson called her on April 8 and informed her that she and McCann had been separated into different rooms after an argument.

Endres said McCann called the following day and told her that “Ashly did something to herself” and had been taken to the hospital. According to Endres, Robinson was also stable. “I said what happened, and he told me it had been 11 hours prior,” she said.

The timeline has become a central focus for Robinson’s family, who have said they still do not believe they have received clear answers. In the days since her death, the family has launched a GoFundMe campaign to help cover travel costs, legal expenses, and the process of bringing Robinson’s body back to the United States.

Before her death, Robinson had been documenting what seemed like a milestone trip. She traveled to Tanzania to celebrate her 31st birthday and became engaged to McCann during a safari proposal she shared on Instagram.

Her final post, uploaded April 5, showed her feeding a giraffe beside rose petals spelling out “HBD Ashlee,” alongside the caption, “Chapter 31 and I’m exactly where I need to be.”
