Practical Magic star Aidan Quinn has spoken out about his absence from the cult classic film’s upcoming sequel.
On Monday evening, the first trailer for Practical Magic 2 was released, showing Oscar winners Nicole Kidman and Sandra Bullock back in action as Gilly and Sally Owens for the first time.
However, there was one notable absentee in Aidan, who previously played inspector Gary Hallet, Sandra’s on-screen love interest, in the first movie.
Since the trailer was released, it’s been pointed out that the sequel appears to have retconned the film’s original ending, in which it looked as though the Owens family curse had been lifted, when Sally and Gary ended up together.
In the new teaser, though, the curse seems to be back in full effect, with Aidan’s character nowhere to be seen.
Earlier this year, Aidan explained to Spin 1038 that he’d not been asked back for Practical Magic 2, but “of course” would have said yes to the sequel had he been approached.
“They were both great to work with,” he recalled of Sandra and Nicole back in February.
“You know, most of my stuff was with Sandy but they were both phenomenal to work with. We had a good time.”
Stockard Channing and Dianne Wiest will both make appearances in Practical Magic 2, alongside new additions like Lee Pace, Joey King (who previously appeared alongside Nicole Kidman in 2024’s A Family Affair) and Game Of Thrones star Maisie Williams.
Practical Magic 2 is slated for release in September 2026, 28 years after the first film hit cinemas.
The sequel has been directed by Oscar winner Susanne Bier, who previously helmed In A Better World, the recipient of the Best Foreign Language Film at the 2011 Academy Awards.
Susanne also directed the 2018 Netflix thriller Bird Box, which starred Sandra Bullock in its lead role.
