THE FIFTH TEXT: How A Suspicious Message And Hidden CCTV Footage Blew The Meridian Woodson Case Wide Open

By The Investigative True Crime Desk Published: June 2, 2026

It was supposed to be a closed case. A tragic, straightforward, and utterly heartbreaking incident on Citrus Boulevard that left two little girls without their mother. When authorities initially responded to the apartment of 28-year-old Meridian Woodson, the narrative seemed clear: a devastated family, a volatile ex-husband, and a devastating final outcome.

But in the world of criminal investigation, the most obvious answer is rarely the whole truth.

Over the past 72 hours, leaked details from the ongoing investigation—specifically concerning a string of digital communications and newly uncovered hallway CCTV footage—have turned this quiet Elmwood tragedy into one of the most baffling mysteries of the year. The official timeline is fracturing, and it all revolves around one chilling detail: The 5th Text.

The Mother’s Testimony: A Digital Shift in Tone

According to Meridian’s mother, the morning of May 28th began like any other Thursday. The two were exchanging text messages—a digital routine familiar to any close mother and daughter.

“The first four messages were completely ordinary,” a source close to the family shared. “They were talking about the girls, grocery lists, weekend plans. It sounded exactly like Meridian. Her tone, her emojis, her usual shorthand.”

But at 9:55 AM, the conversation took a sudden, jarring turn. The fifth message arrived. It was abruptly formal, entirely devoid of Meridian’s usual warmth, and contained a highly specific reference to her ex-husband’s life insurance policy.

For the grieving mother, this wasn’t just an odd message; it was a blaring alarm. The grammar was different. The cadence was wrong. Was Meridian trying to send a coded cry for help? Or, as investigators are now silently questioning: Was Meridian even the one holding her phone?

The Hidden Hallway CCTV: A Glaring Discrepancy

The answer to that terrifying question might lie in a piece of evidence the public was never meant to see.

While the main security cameras in the apartment complex inexplicably suffered a “network failure” during the crucial 10-minute window of the incident, a neighbor’s private doorbell camera at the end of the hall remained active. And what it captured is currently sending shockwaves through the investigative team.

According to forensic tech insiders, the neighbor’s camera caught a shadowy figure moving near the rear exit of Meridian’s apartment. The timestamp on the footage? 9:55 AM—the exact minute the bizarre 5th text was sent to her mother.

If the ex-husband was already inside the apartment, who was the figure slipping out the back? And if a confrontation was actively occurring, how could Meridian have calmly typed out a grammatically perfect sentence about an insurance policy?

The $500K Secret and The “Third Figure” Theory

As detectives dig deeper into the ex-husband’s background, the “insurance” text is looking less like a random comment and more like a motive. Subpoenaed documents reportedly show a recent, highly contested change to a policy worth upwards of a half-million dollars.

But the CCTV footage introduces a terrifying new variable. The timeline simply does not add up for a lone actor.

  • 9:42 AM: The ex-husband’s vehicle is seen entering the parking lot.

  • 9:50 AM: The first four “normal” texts are exchanged.

  • 9:55 AM: The 5th text is sent, precisely as the unknown figure is caught on the neighbor’s camera.

  • 10:00 AM: Authorities receive the first emergency call.

This five-minute window is the black hole of the Meridian Woodson case. True crime analysts are now floating a chilling theory: The ex-husband did not act alone. The 5th text was a calculated decoy sent by a third party to buy time, create a false narrative, or establish an alibi that ultimately fell apart.

The Search For The Truth

The authorities remain tight-lipped, officially stating only that it is an “ongoing and active investigation.” But behind closed doors, the digital forensics team is frantically working to triangulate the exact location of Meridian’s phone when that final message was sent.

Meanwhile, the true victims in this dark web of secrets are Meridian’s two little girls, aged 4 and 7, who have been shielded from the horrifying realities of that morning. As the community rallies around them to support their future, the demand for transparency grows louder.

Meridian Woodson left behind five texts. Four were a mother’s everyday love. The fifth was a breadcrumb leading into the darkest corners of human greed. The question now is: Will investigators follow it to the real mastermind?

Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Office investigating murder-suicide in Elmwood

The Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Office is investigating a murder-suicide in Elmwood.

The murder happened at an apartment complex in Elmwood in the 5100 block of Citrus Boulevard around 10 a.m. Thursday.

Investigators said 28-year-old Meridian Woodson was found shot to death inside an apartment.

Deputies said her ex-husband, identified in court documents as Kody Woodson, 30, shot her and later died by suicide.

Court records obtained by WDSU reveal years of abuse allegations, custody battles, and court intervention involving the couple’s two young daughters, leading up to the deadly shooting.

The filings show the former couple was involved in a contentious divorce and custody battle in 2024.

In her petition for divorce, Meridian Woodson accused Kody Woodson of repeated abuse during their marriage.

Meridian claimed that in January 2024, after she told Kody she wanted a divorce, he became upset, and they fought at her apartment.

A few weeks later, she accused him of an incident where she described him in a “jealous rage.”

According to the petition, he “grabbed her phone from her hand” and “grabbed her by the arm and threw her to the ground.”

The filing also described an alleged incident involving a firearm.

Meridian claimed she heard “the distinctive sound of a gun being cocked” before finding Kody with a gun inside the apartment.

Another section of the filing claimed Kody told Meridian during an argument, “You’re making me hurt you, you always make me hurt you.”

Kody Woodson denied many of those allegations in his own court filing and accused Meridian of violent behavior during their marriage.

In his answer and counterclaim, Kody alleged Meridian had a history of “choking, slapping, scratching, biting,” and attacking him during arguments.

He referenced a Feb. 27, 2024, incident where Meridian was arrested after a violent argument in front of their children.

Meridian claimed in her court filing that she was acting in self-defense and that the evidence Kody provided to police was taken out of context.

Online court records show that both parents requested the other to complete domestic violence intervention classes as part of the custody proceedings.

The filings show both sought sole custody of their daughters while accusing the other of being the aggressor.

The online court filings do not go past 2025, and there are no documented civil or criminal instances between the two since their divorce was finalized in May of last year.

According to court records, a temporary sole custody was given and a hearing was scheduled for June 18, 2026.
