The Houston community is reeling after authorities identified the family killed in an apparent murder-su//icide that has sent shockwaves through both the city’s restaurant and fashion scenes.
Police say Matthew Mitchell and his wife, Thy Mitchell — the owners of popular Houston dining spots Traveler’s Table and Traveler’s Cart — were killed along with their two young children.
Investigators say the incident unfolded Monday night when Matthew Mitchell allegedly shot the couple’s 4-year-old son, 8-year-old daughter and Thy Mitchell before taking his own life.
The tragic loss has left many who knew the family in disbelief.

“I was in shock,” said Gloria Benedict, who knew Thy Mitchell and her family. “I knew both her husband, Thy, and her children.”
The couple had become well-known in Houston’s food scene, celebrated for bringing global flavors and creative concepts to their restaurants. In a 2024 interview on Great Day Houston, the pair spoke about launching their newest venture, Traveler’s Cart, and shared glimpses into their relationship, which spanned more than a decade.
But Thy Mitchell’s impact extended beyond the culinary world.
She also made a name for herself in Houston’s fashion community after launching her own clothing line in 2023. Friends say her creativity, professionalism and vision left a lasting impression.
“She was amazing to work with and had a vision,” Benedict said. “I admired her intelligence, creativity and honesty. She had a fun side. I will miss that.”
In past interviews, Thy Mitchell described her passion for designing travel-inspired apparel focused on comfort — another reflection of her entrepreneurial spirit.
Now, those who knew the family say they are mourning not only a devastating loss, but also the legacy the couple leaves behind — from their contributions to Houston’s vibrant restaurant scene to Thy’s growing influence in fashion.
In a message shared on social media, Thy Mitchell’s sister said the family is “heartbroken and grieving deeply” and asked for privacy during this time.
The investigation remains ongoing.
