Accused double-murderer Nick Reiner is alone with his dark thoughts in a Los Angeles prison – a far cry from the privileged life of luxury his parents afforded him.
He has had no visitors besides his public defender, and his high-profile case means he has been segregated from other inmates in a solitary cell.
The 32-year-old is charged with cutting the throats of his movie-maker father Rob Reiner and mother Michele on December 14.
He was seen in court last week, when he pleaded not guilty to the murders, dressed in a brown gown worn by inmates in ‘mental observation housing’ – where they are checked every 15 minutes due to suicide risk.
The Twin Towers, which has separate facilities for male and female inmates, was scrutinized by senators in 2023 for its ‘appalling’ conditions after a number of inmates were found shackled to tables, sleeping in urine soaked floors and sat in their own feces.

The Towers also has a history of sexual assaults among inmates and even the deputies guarding them, according to reports from the US Justice Department.
Former LA County Sheriff Alex Villanueva told the Daily Mail that Nick has most likely not been allowed to associate with any other inmates in the Twin Towers Correctional Facility downtown.
‘Any type of case like this, a high-profile case, causes the department to place the inmate in what’s called administrative segregation, designed to prevent the inmate from being hurt by other inmates,’ Villanueva said.
‘I saw some of his first court appearances, and he was wearing what we call a suicide gown,’ Villanueva said of Nick. ‘That’s one garment held together with Velcro that can’t be ripped apart to form ligatures.’

Nick Reiner in court on Monday where he entered a not guilty plea
Nick Reiner is seen in a courtroom sketch wearing an anti-suicide smock during his first appearance on murder charges on December 17, 2025
He is accused of killing his father, Rob Reiner, director of movies including When Harry Met Sally and Field of Dreams, and his mother Michele
Former sheriff Villanueva was in charge of jails for the county between 2018 and 2022, overseeing an inmate population of around 21,000, the largest in the US. He also worked in jails during his police career.
The ‘gown’ precaution, the ex-sheriff said, was to prevent the inmate hanging himself using torn strips of fabric, like late pedophile financier Jeffrey Epstein did while awaiting trial in 2019.
Villanueva added that the outfit indicated Nick is in ‘mental observation housing,’ where the most unstable inmates get constant surveillance.
‘They get mandatory checks every 15 minutes at a minimum, 24/7,’ he said.
‘He’ll be in a cell on his own. They have day rooms, areas that are restricted to similar inmates. But some are classified as K10s, who they keep away from everybody.’

A ‘K10’ inmate is deemed too dangerous to associate even with the other segregated prisoners.
‘Some have to remain alone at all times because they’re a danger, not only to others, but to themselves too. They want to hurt themselves, or they want to hurt somebody else,’ the former sheriff said.
A source who has spent time in the same mental health unit says conditions there are ‘horrible’.
‘There are crazies everywhere,’ the source said.

The Twin Towers Correctional Facility’s mental health unit is a ‘horrible’ place with ‘crazies everywhere, a former inmate told the Daily Mail
‘It’s the kind of place you don’t want to spend two minutes in. It makes One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest look like a day spa,’ the source added, referring to Ken Kesey’s famous 1962 novel about a brutal mental institution.

Instead of meals at restaurants such as Nobu in Malibu – the LA beach town where his family own a home – Reiner has had to quickly grow accustomed to ‘gross’ pasta and beans provided by the jail.
‘The food is not that good, but that is the way jail food is – lots of mystery meat,’ the source told the Daily Mail. ‘It is tasteless, but at least there are no bugs in it.
‘And there is no metal silverware because it can be used as a weapon. So only plastic sporks – like a spoon and fork combo – are used.’
According to the source, the only people Reiner now sees are prison staffers.
‘He will see guards and the psychiatrists that talk to him, but when he does, he will be handcuffed and watched. He is high risk, so many precautions will be taken. He is restricted, there is zero freedom,’ the source said.
He is also being constantly monitored by doctors, according to the source.
‘You have to talk to psychiatrists a lot, you can’t get out of it. And often, the patients are on medications – they vary; some make you totally out of it,’ the source added.
‘I don’t know what Nick is on, but medications are a part of the stay. They can refuse them, but often they just don’t know what is going on so they take them.’
But the worst part of a stay in the unit is fellow inmates.
Villanueva said Nick is in ‘mental observation housing,’ where the most unstable inmates get constant surveillance. File image shows inmates at the facility

‘It’s the kind of place you don’t want to spend two minutes in. It makes One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest look like a day spa,’ a source said
‘They constantly scream night and day – they don’t shut up. There is no mute button,’ said the former inmate. ‘They don’t know what they are saying or doing.
‘The noise really gets to you, it rocks your nervous system because it’s weird, like howling and all the profanity and sick sex talk. It’s not good.’
The temperature of the jail makes the situation worse, according to our source.
‘It’s really cold in there at all times, you are always cold, it’s not a good feeling, especially in the winter,’ he said. ‘It’s not like you can crank up the thermostat or ask for a down comforter or cashmere throw. And it’s dark – you don’t see much sunlight.’
Another law enforcement source close to the jail administration told the Daily Mail that Reiner was in a unit with intense, regular observation due to the violence of his alleged crime and history of poor mental health.
The source also said that he had received no family or friends at the jail, although his aunt Annie Reiner – Rob’s younger sister – did show up at court on Monday.
‘It appears only his attorney has visited at this time,’ the source told the Daily Mail.
The heavily monitored category Reiner is said to be in is very different to the average prisoner.
‘In general population, you live in a dorm setting. You have multiple people in one cell,’ said Villanueva.

Just three months before the tragedy the Reiner family – including Nick – were all smiles at the premiere of Spinal Tap 2: The End Continues in LA
Rob’s younger sister Annie was the only family member who turned up at Nick Reiner’s arraignment Monday
‘You can do outdoor recreation activities or day room recreational activities surrounded by other inmates that have the same security classification, and you’re not segregated.’
Villanueva, who plans to run for reelection to his old post in November, said Reiner will have been given a ‘full medical screen’ including a mental health assessment when he was placed in the jail.
‘They have to figure out what medication he was taking and continue him taking that medication until doctors agree to change it,’ he said.
Reiner’s pills may become a pertinent issue in his case.
TMZ reported that Reiner switched to a new medication for his alleged schizoaffective disorder a month before the killings.
But Villanueva was skeptical, saying the report was the kind of information a defense attorney would want placed in the media to start building a public case for an insanity defense.
‘The lawyer is going to claim a change in medication,’ he said. ‘But in many cases we’ve seen on the streets, the person is under psychiatric care, and then they just stop taking psychiatric medications. Then they fall apart and they go back to whatever the behavior was that got them on the meds in the first place.’
The ex-sheriff predicted that Reiner ultimately changing his plea to ‘not guilty by reason of insanity’ would be ‘a likely course of action.’
