According to court records, Michael David McKee, 39, was arrested at noon on January 10 (local time) in Illinois by the Winnebago County Sheriff’s Office. He faces two murder charges related to the deaths of Spencer Tepe and Monique Tepe at their home in Columbus on December 30, 2025.

According to the investigation, the suspect was married to Monique in 2015 and divorced in 2017. Court records show the divorce was amicable, with both living in Virginia at the time.

The bodies of Spencer, 37, and Monique, 39, were discovered after friends arrived at their home around 9 a.m. because Spencer hadn’t shown up for work. Police said Spencer died from multiple gunshot wounds, while Monique was shot at least once in the chest.

The couple’s two children – a 4-year-old girl and a 1-year-old boy – were found inside the house in a state of panic but unharmed.

Investigators determined the shooting occurred between 2 and 5 a.m. on the upper floor of the house. There were no signs of forced entry, and no weapon was found at the scene. Security video released later showed a “suspicious figure” walking in an alley near the victim’s home in the early morning hours.

Authorities said they traced a vehicle that appeared in the neighborhood where Tepe’s family lived before the crime, and then traveled to Rockford, Illinois. The vehicle was identified as belonging to McKee.

In a statement following the suspect’s arrest, Tepe’s family expressed: “Nothing can compensate for this immense loss. We thank the community for their concern, prayers, and support, and we trust that the justice system will bring those responsible to justice.”

According to public records, McKee attended Ohio State University School of Medicine, held medical licenses in Illinois and California, and had lived in several states in recent years. He worked as a vascular surgeon at a clinic in the Rockford area.

McKee is currently being held in Illinois awaiting extradition to Ohio to stand trial. His first hearing is scheduled for early next week.
