The man died in the accident involving a Frontier Airlines plane.
A Frontier Airlines flight departing from Denver International Airport was forced to abort its takeoff after the aircraft struck and killed an unidentified person on the runway, according to local officials
According to the airport, the victim was struck by the plane just two minutes after jumping over security late on May 8th. Videos from the scene show damage to the engine’s propeller. According to the New York Post, the person was sucked into the engine.
“We are stopped on the runway. We just hit someone. One engine is on fire… There is a pedestrian crossing the runway,” the pilot told air traffic control.
An air traffic controller heard a warning to colleagues that the runway had been closed after the incident, saying, “There are body parts on the runway… It appears a person has died.” A first responder also reported to operations that “there appear to be human body parts on the runway.”
The collision caused the engine to catch fire and forced passengers to evacuate using emergency slides as smoke filled the cabin of the narrow-body Airbus A321. Of the 224 passengers on board, 12 sustained minor injuries, five of whom required hospitalization.
Passengers recorded the moment of impact and the evacuation. One witness told KUSA-TV that the plane briefly lifted off the ground but quickly descended again after hitting something.
US Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy confirmed the incident and warned on X on May 9th that “no one is permitted to enter an airport without authorization under any circumstances.”
