Time & Location: The snow avalanche occurred around February 17, 2026, in the Sierra Nevada mountains of Northern California, near the popular ski area of Tahoe, at an elevation of nearly 2,500 meters.
Consequences: Eight people were confirmed dead and six others were rescued. This is considered the deadliest snow avalanche in the US since 1981.
Cause: The winter storm brought heavy snowfall (more than 5 cm per hour), creating a “new sheet avalanche” where new snow does not adhere firmly to the old layer.
Protection: The research team had to use specialized vehicles to replace skis to conserve fuel and minimize the risk of further skiing.
Warning: The Sierra Avalanche Prediction Center has upgraded its warning to a high danger level, indicating a significant risk of fuel accumulation or human injury.
