If you let me inside, my sister will tell everyone we were sleeping together before you dumped her.”

That was the first thing Tara said when I opened my apartment door at 12:17 a.m.

Freezing rain was hitting the railing behind her so hard it sounded like gravel. Her dark hair was soaked, her hands were shaking, and she was clutching a brown grocery bag against her chest like it contained something she was terrified to lose.

“Tara, get inside.”

She hesitated.

“You don’t understand, Jake. Renata already thinks the worst.”

Renata.

My ex-girlfriend.

Tara’s older sister.

The woman who had spent the last fourteen months telling everyone I ended our relationship because I was “afraid of commitment.”

That wasn’t why we broke up.

Renata wanted me to move into her condo and pay half the mortgage while keeping my name off the deed.

When I refused, she told her family I had abandoned her.

Apparently, that was only the beginning.

Tara stepped inside, dripping water onto my entry mat.

“I left Renata’s engagement party,” she said.

“Why?”

“She made a toast about women who wait around for their sister’s leftovers.”

My stomach tightened.

Then Tara reached into the grocery bag and pulled out a small digital recorder.

“She read our messages.”

Our messages were innocent.

Medical articles.

Coffee recommendations.

A picture of a roadside honey stand.

We had never kissed.

Never touched.

Never crossed the line while I was dating Renata.

But Tara pressed PLAY.

And my ex’s voice filled my kitchen.

“You will apologize to me. Then you will stop contacting Jake.”

Tara’s recorded voice answered, “We never did anything.”

Renata laughed.

“It doesn’t have to happen. It only has to look ugly.”

I stopped breathing.

On the recording, Renata threatened to contact Tara’s school and accuse her of having an affair with her sister’s boyfriend.

Then she said something worse.

“Tara, you don’t love him. You just want something that was mine.”

The recording ended.

For a long moment, neither of us spoke.

Then Tara looked at me.

“I didn’t come here because of the ice.”

“I figured.”

“I came because I’m tired of her controlling every version of the truth.”

“What truth?”

She swallowed.

“The truth about you and me.”

My heart started pounding.

“I’ve loved you since that clinic barbecue three years ago.”

I stared at her.

She gave a nervous laugh.

“I never acted on it. I stayed away while you two were together. I dated other people. I even blocked your number twice.”

“Twice?”

“Unblocked it before breakfast both times.”

Despite everything, I almost smiled.

Then headlights swept across my living-room ceiling.

Tara turned toward the window.

Her face went white.

A black SUV had stopped outside.

“That’s Renata.”

My phone buzzed.

SEND MY SISTER DOWN NOW.

Then another message appeared.

I BROUGHT WESTON. LET’S SEE WHO HE BELIEVES.

I opened my doorbell camera.

Renata stood beneath a red umbrella, smiling directly into the lens.

Beside her was her fiancé, Weston, holding a thick folder.

Then he lifted it toward the camera and called through the door:

“Jake, we have signed statements proving you were pursuing Tara while you were still dating Renata.”

Tara whispered, “That’s impossible.”

I looked at the timestamp.

12:31 a.m.

Then I looked across the hall.

My retired police-sergeant neighbor had just opened her door.

And Renata had absolutely no idea that the next five minutes were about to destroy the story she had spent three years building.
