All my calls were met with cold, intermittent ringing. It wasn’t because he’d lost signal; my intuition told me: My number had been blocked
Chapter 1: The Bell Rings in Hopelessness
Chloe’s bedroom was bathed in the warm light of her cloud-shaped nightlight. It was 9:30 p.m. New York time. Seven-year-old Chloe sat with her knees drawn up to her chest on the bed, her eyes glued to her iPad, her tiny fingers frantically pressing the FaceTime button to call her dad.
“Mommy, Daddy still hasn’t answered,” Chloe looked up, her gray eyes, just like her father’s, glistening with tears. “He promised that no matter how late he was on a business trip to Chicago with clients, he’d call and kiss me to sleep.”
I walked closer, stroking her silky blonde hair, trying to force a reassuring smile, though a strange unease began to rise inside me. Mark, my husband, was a busy financial lawyer, but he had never broken a promise to our daughter. He adored her so much he’d skip a board meeting just to hear Chloe talk about a perfect ten in math.
“Let me try calling with my phone. Maybe Dad’s out of battery or in an area with weak signal, honey.”
I pulled out my phone and dialed Mark’s number.
“The number you are trying to reach is currently unavailable…”
I patiently called again, then a third time. Still the same icy voice of the automated operator. Thinking maybe AT&T’s mobile network was experiencing problems, I switched to WhatsApp, then iMessage.
But no. The messages I sent didn’t show “Delivered.” Calls on every app were immediately cut off after a short half-ring. A chill ran down my spine. My intuition as a wife of ten years told me: I wasn’t unreachable because he had no signal.
I had been blocked. Mark had blocked my number, and blocked my daughter’s iPad account as well.
After lulling Chloe to sleep with tears still clinging to her eyelashes, I sat huddled in the living room, head in my hands, alone in our large suburban Connecticut home. Why did he do that? If he had an accident, the police would call me. If he was kidnapped, the kidnappers would have to keep their phones on. Actively blocking my number could only mean: He was avoiding me.
Chapter 2: The Truth from Tropical Paradise
The next morning, my anxiety turned into anger and suspicion. I decided to do something I hadn’t done in ten years: Log into the family’s shared iCloud account, which Mark had carelessly left the password to, and track the location of the MacBook he’d left in his home office, thereby accessing his email history.
Mark’s inbox was empty of flights to Chicago. But in the “Trash” folder, there was a hotel booking confirmation email sent three days earlier.
Hotel: The Ritz-Carlton, Cancun, Mexico.
Duration: 4 days, 3 nights.
Guest names: Mark Vance & Jessica Miller.
Jessica Miller. The name felt like a dagger to my heart. She was the 24-year-old legal assistant who had only been working at his company six months prior. The girl with the flowing brown hair and Instagram posts overflowing with glamorous travel photos that I had naively “liked,” thinking she was a good employee.
I tremblingly opened Instagram, searching for Jessica’s account. Her account was private, but I quickly used a secondary account I created to follow my fashion store. I sent a friend request. Just five minutes later, she accepted. It seemed she was so intoxicated by her victory that she wanted to show it off to the whole world.
And what I saw made my chest tighten, the pain so intense I couldn’t breathe.
A series of Stories updated just hours earlier. Cancun beach stretched out with white sand, the Caribbean waves a brilliant blue. In one photo, two Margarita cocktail glasses clinked against each other under the glorious sunset. The next photo showed Mark – my husband, the exemplary father of my daughter – wearing the swimming trunks I had bought for him, a radiant smile unlike anything I’d ever seen, his arm around Jessica’s waist from behind.
The caption read: “Heaven with my man. Sorry for making you wait in the dark for so long.”
It turned out that the reason he blocked my number and my daughter’s wasn’t because he was busy. It was because he didn’t want the ringing of our seven-year-old daughter’s phone to ruin his romantic moment with his mistress. He chose to protect that prostitute’s moment of pleasure, instead of a goodnight message to our crying child waiting at home.
The overwhelming pain instantly transformed into a cold, burning flame of hatred. I looked in the mirror, wiping away the single tear that fell on my cheek. I’m not the type of woman who will cry, beg, or cause a scene at the airport. Mark Vance, you’ve underestimated your wife, who comes from a New York-based family of lawyers.
Chapter 3: The Wife’s Plan
I picked up the phone and called my father, a retired, veteran divorce lawyer, and asked him to introduce me to the best private investigator and the sharpest lawyer in Connecticut.
“I want him penniless, Dad,” I said, my voice eerily calm.
“I understand, daughter. Gather all the evidence. Don’t stir up trouble,” my father’s voice was steady over the phone.
For the next three days, while Mark was still basking in the Mexican sun, I was busier than ever at home. With the help of a private investigator, I discovered that Mark had secretly transferred a large sum of money from their joint savings account to a trust account in Jessica’s name under the guise of “consulting fees.” This was a legal pre-divorce asset transfer – a fatal mistake if exposed in court.
I copied all the bank statements, images from Jessica’s Instagram, booking messages, and even evidence of his false declaration to the company that he was on a business trip to use company funds to pay for it (a form of embezzlement of corporate assets).
On the fourth day, the day Mark was scheduled to fly back, I unblocked his number.
At exactly 6 p.m., the doorbell rang. Mark walked into the house, his Cancun-tanned skin, carrying a gift bag from the airport duty-free shop, his face feigning the exhaustion of someone who had just endured a long flight from Chicago.
“Hi honey, hello Chloe! Dad’s home!” he called out loudly, his voice full of feigned enthusiasm.
Chloe ran out of the room and hugged her father. Mark picked her up and kissed her repeatedly: “Sorry, my princess, there was a huge snowstorm in Chicago a few days ago, the cell tower went down, so my phone broke and I couldn’t call you.”
I stood in the kitchen doorway, arms crossed, watching his perfect act. Disgust rose to my throat.
“Are you tired, Mark? How was your trip to Chicago? Was it very cold?” I smiled, a smile he would remember forever as a nightmare.
“It’s freezing, dear, the wind is biting. I just want to take a hot shower,” Mark replied with a laugh, placing the gift bag on the table.
“That’s good, because I’ve prepared a surprise gift to ‘warm you up’.”
Chapter 4: A Captivating Ending
I walked to the table, picked up a large, dark brown envelope, and tossed it lightly in front of him. Mark frowned at me, his smile stiffening slightly.
“What is this?”
“Open it.”
Mark put Chloe down and sent her to play in her room. When we were alone in the living room, he tore open the envelope. The moment the pictures inside were revealed, Mark’s tanned face instantly turned ashen.
They weren’t just screenshots of Jessica’s Instagram. There were also high-definition photos taken by a private investigator right at the Ritz-Carlton beach: Mark applying sunscreen to Jessica’s back, and the two of them passionately kissing on the balcony of the VIP room. Attached to them were my signed divorce papers and documents proving he embezzled public funds to support his mistress.
“Claire… this… can you explain? This was just a mistake…” Mark’s voice trembled, beads of sweat forming on his forehead.
“You explain that you blocked your daughter’s number when she cried for her father’s voice just so you wouldn’t be disturbed while sleeping with her?” I moved closer, my voice low but sharp as a razor. “You explain that you used Chloe’s future tuition money to buy her an apartment in Queens?”
“Claire, please! We can reconcile. I’ll cut ties with her! Don’t do this, my career will be ruined!” Mark knelt down, trying to grab my hand. He knew perfectly well that with the evidence of embezzlement, he would not only lose his law license but also face imprisonment.
I took a step back, looking at him with utter contempt.
“It’s too late, Mark. The moment you pressed the ‘Block’ button on your daughter, you signed the death warrant for this family.”
I smiled, pulled out my phone, and dialed a pre-saved number.
“Hello, managing partner of Vance & Associates, right? This is Claire. I believe you’d be very interested to see the document I sent you two minutes ago regarding the branch’s expenses…”
Mark’s face completely collapsed. He understood that he had lost everything: his family, his career, his reputation, and his money. Our prenuptial agreement was clear, and with the evidence of infidelity and asset misappropriation, he would have to leave this house empty-handed.
“Get out of my house. Right now,” I pointed to the door. “Your clothes, I donated them to charity this morning.”
Mark bowed his head, pulled the suitcase he’d just brought from the airport, and walked out the door into the cold Connecticut night.
I locked the door and went back into Chloe’s room. She was quietly reading her comic book. I climbed into bed and hugged my one and only treasure.
“Mommy, is Daddy on another business trip?” Chloe asked innocently.
“No, my love,” I kissed her forehead, feeling a sense of freedom and relief I’d never experienced before. “Your father isn’t away on business. He’s just been ‘blocked’ from our lives forever. From now on, Mom will be the one to call and wish you goodnight every night.”
Under the warm glow of the nightlight, my daughter and I drifted into a peaceful sleep, leaving behind the traitor paying a heavy price in the darkness outside.
