In the quiet predawn hours of March 10, 2026, a peaceful neighborhood in Berkeley Township, New Jersey, was shattered by unimaginable violence that has left a family devastated and a community in mourning.

Vaughn Stewart, 37, of Maplewood, entered the Fairwood Drive home where his estranged wife, Deonna Stewart, 38, lived with her parents, Allan Russell, 61, and Michelle Russell, 60. The couple had been living separately, with Deonna and their three young children—an infant, a 3-year-old, and a 5-year-old—staying under the protection of her parents.

Authorities say Vaughn fatally shot Allan and Michelle inside the residence shortly after 5 a.m. As gunfire echoed through the house, Deonna fled in terror, running down the street in a desperate bid for survival. Vaughn pursued her relentlessly, firing multiple shots until she collapsed about 50 yards from home, fatally wounded.

He then returned to the house, where police arrived to a horrific scene. Inside, officers discovered the bodies of Allan and Michelle, along with the three unharmed children who had been present throughout the nightmare. Vaughn was found suffering from a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head; he was rushed to Community Medical Center in Toms River but was later pronounced dead.

The children, now orphans, were placed in the care of the Department of Child Protection and Permanency. They had witnessed the unimaginable—gunshots ringing out, their grandparents slain in their own home, their mother chased and killed outside—leaving them with deep psychological scars that may haunt their nights for years to come.

Neighbors described waking to the sound of at least eight gunshots piercing the early morning silence, transforming a suburban street into a crime scene cordoned off by police and SWAT teams. The Russells were remembered by friends as kind, helpful people who opened their home to support their daughter and grandchildren during difficult times.

This tragedy underscores the devastating impact of domestic strife when it escalates to lethal extremes. The family had endured separation, and prior records indicate Vaughn faced charges related to a domestic violence threat earlier this year, highlighting missed opportunities for intervention.

As the investigation continues, the focus remains on the three innocent children left behind. Their future is uncertain, marked by loss of both parents and grandparents in a single, senseless act of rage and despair. The community grapples with grief, asking how such horror could unfold in a place once considered safe.

This heartbreaking event serves as a stark reminder of the hidden dangers in troubled relationships and the urgent need for support systems to protect vulnerable families before violence erupts. For now, three young lives hang in the balance, forever changed by the bloodshed that stole their world before the sun even rose.
