A week after Renee Good was fatally shot by an Immigration and Customs Enforcement agent in Minneapolis, her family hired the Chicago-based law firm that also represented George Floyd’s family to conduct a civil investigation into the shooting.
“What happened to Renee is wrong, contrary to established policing practices and procedures, and should never happen in today’s America,” Romanucci & Blandin, the firm representing Good’s family, said in a statement.
This action comes after a Justice Department official said the department does not believe there is currently any basis to open a criminal civil rights investigation into the killing of Good. An FBI probe is ongoing.
In a statement, Romanucci & Blandin founding partner Antonio Romanucci said the public is not receiving transparency about the case, so his firm will “provide that to the country.” The firm said it intends to share information learned in the investigation on a rolling basis.
“People in Minneapolis and across this country truly, truly care about what happened to Renee Good on January 7, 2026, and are committed to understanding how she could have been killed on the street after dropping her child off at school,” Romanucci said in a statement.
Good and her partner were driving home after dropping off their 6-year-old at school when they were approached by federal agents in their neighborhood, the firm said in a statement. In video of the incident, Good can be seen turning the wheel to the right, away from the agent near the front of her car, the firm said. As she moves forward, the agent fires into the vehicle.
In a statement, Good’s family said that “the kind of unending care we’ve been given during this time is exactly the kind that she gave to everyone” and that she “was the beautiful light of our family and brought joy to anyone she met.”
In 2021, Romanucci and other attorneys for Floyd’s family won a record $27 million payout from the city of Minneapolis to settle a wrongful death lawsuit.
