Loved ones are urgently asking for the public’s help as the search continues for a fisherman who disappeared while fishing in Newport Beach on Christmas Eve.
The man, identified by police as Lu Thu “Tyler” Tran, 42, was last known to be fishing near the Wedge on Dec. 24, according to reporting by the Orange County Register. At the time, Tran was visiting family in Southern California for the holidays from Reno, Nevada
Family members grew concerned after losing contact with him later that day and went to look for him themselves, the O.C. Register reported.
According to the Register, the fisherman’s car and fishing gear were found near the beach, but there was no sign of him. Police were eventually called, and he has not been seen since.
KTLA has independently confirmed with Garden Grove police that the man remains missing. Sgt. Nick Jensen said Newport Beach police and Newport Beach lifeguards are coordinating the ongoing search.
“The family has created their own flyer and has been distributing it,” Jensen told KTLA.
The Orange County Register reported that Newport Beach Fire Department lifeguards began searching on Christmas Day, though stormy weather initially limited visibility and operations. While conditions briefly improved, incoming storms have again complicated search efforts.
As of Wednesday, lifeguards were continuing search operations using rescue vessels and dive teams, with plans to deploy aerial and drone searches when weather conditions allow, according to the Register.
Family members say they are holding onto hope and are asking anyone who may have seen the fisherman or has information about his whereabouts to contact local authorities.
