Two teenagers died in separate sledding accidents during a massive winter storm that blanketed multiple states, causing power outages, road hazards, and cancelled flights.
A 17-year-old boy in Arkansas and a 16-year-old girl in Texas died in the incidents. The teens were among at least 13 weather-related deaths reported, according to the Associated Press.
Deep snow extended in a 1,300-mile stretch from Arkansas to New England which triggered wide school cancellations on Monday. Roughly two feet were forecast in some of the harder-hit areas.

In Texas, a 16-year-old Elizabeth Angle died and another 16-year-old is in critical condition after a sledding accident. Family members on social media and an FC Dallas soccer coach later confirmed Angle’s identity.
Frisco police told FOX 7 Austin that a 16-year-old male was driving a Jeep while pulling the two victims on a sled near Majestic Gardens Drive and Killian Court in Frisco, Texas, on Sunday afternoon.
Witnesses shared with the news outlet that the sled hit a curb and collided with a tree. Officers administered life-saving efforts before the two were transported to a local hospital, where Angle died.
Authorities reported that a 17-year-old boy was killed in a sledding accident over the weekend in Benton, Arkansas. Officials told KARK-TV in Arkansas that the unidentified teen was riding on an inner tube being pulled by a motor vehicle before the tube struck a tree.
Saline County Sheriff’s deputies responded to the scene on Sunday and found the teen critically injured. In a statement obtained by KATV in Arkansas, the sheriff’s office said in part: “Emergency responders provided immediate medical assistance; however, despite lifesaving efforts, the juvenile succumbed to his injuries.”
The Saline County Sheriff’s Office confirmed to KATV in Arkansas that the accident is still under investigation and didn’t offer additional information.
