The 84-year-old was last seen near her home in Catalina Foothills, north of Tucson, Ariz. on Saturday, Jan. 31
Nancy is described as a “vulnerable adult” by the Pima County Sheriff’s Department
Authorities in Arizona are asking for the public’s assistance in locating Savannah Guthrie’s elderly mother.
On Sunday, Feb. 1, the Pima County Sheriff’s Department (PCSD) launched an urgent search for Nancy Guthrie following her disappearance on Saturday, Jan. 31. The “vulnerable adult,” 84, was last seen at her residence near East Skyline Drive and North Campbell Avenue at around 9:30 p.m. local time.
The PCSD describes Nancy, 84, as a female with brown hair and blue eyes. She is 5 feet, 5 inches tall and weighs around 150 lbs. It is currently unknown what clothes she was wearing at the time of her disappearance.

In a press conference on Sunday, Sheriff Chris Nanos revealed that the search-and-rescue mission is underway amid a concerning scene at Nancy’s house after family called 911 around noon to report her missing.
“We get these calls quite often, and we do a good job of searching the area,” he said. “But, this one stood out because of what was described to us at the scene and what we found and located just in looking at the scene.”

Nanos added that the mother of the Today show co-anchor is considered “not in good physical health” and may have been exposed to cold weather all night.
“She has no cognitive issues at all,” he clarified. “Just some physical ailments that limit her ability to move around.”

A spokesperson for Today said in a statement to PEOPLE, “We can confirm this is a missing persons case, and the family is working closely with local law enforcement. If anyone has any information, please contact the Pima County Sheriff’s Department at 520-351-4900. The family is grateful for the outreach, thoughts and prayers.”

In an attempt to locate Nancy, Nanos said authorities are using airplanes, drones, helicopters and search-and-rescue dogs on loan from Border Patrol. The possibility of foul play has not been ruled out, with homicide detectives reportedly also involved in the investigation despite a body not having been found.
“I hope we find her safe and sound, but we can’t ignore what’s in front of us,” said Nanos.
Nancy made a guest appearance on the Today show in November 2025, when Savannah, 54, returned to her hometown.
Back in 2023, Savannah spoke about her mom in a segment on the show titled “Lessons Learned from Moms,” according to The Hollywood Reporter.
Savannah Guthrie has not yet spoken publicly about her mother’s disappearance.
A representative for the Pima County Sheriff’s Department did not immediately respond to PEOPLE’s request for further information.
