Sha’Carri Richardson, an Olympic gold medalist and one of the world’s fastest women on the track, has been arrested in Florida and accused of driving over 100 mph, according to jail booking records.
The 25-year-old sprinter was arrested and booked into Orange County Jail on Thursday on a charge of dangerous excessive speeding at 100 mph or more, records showed.
Her bond has been set at $500.
A representative for Richardson and USA Track and Field did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
Richardson is a titan in the arena, winning silver in the 100 meter and gold in the 4×100 meter relay in the 2024 Paris Olympics. But she is no stranger to controversy off the track.
In August, she was arrested on allegations that she assaulted her boyfriend at the Seattle-Tacoma International Airport. She later issued an apology on social media. The incident report indicated Richard’s boyfriend, Christian Coleman, did not want to press charges.
In 2021, she was suspended for a month after testing positive for THC, the chemical in cannabis, at the 2021 U.S. Olympic trials, which barred her from competing in her signature event at the Tokyo Games.
Florida’s super speeder law took effect July 1. It makes it illegal to drive 50 mph over the speed limit or over 100 mph. A first conviction carries a prison term of up to 30 days or a fine of $500. A second or subsequent conviction is punishable by 90 days in prison or a fine of $1,000. Further, a second conviction within five years will lead to revoked driving privileges for at least 180 days.
