HOUSTON, Texas — A domestic dispute turned into a terrifying nightmare late Wednesday night after a couple allegedly set fire to their own home during a heated argument, while five young children were trapped inside, according to local authorities.
Firefighters and police officers responded to emergency 911 calls reporting a heavy residential fire shortly after 11:30 p.m. When first responders arrived at the scene, flames were already engulfing the front porch and spreading rapidly toward the roof of the two-story suburban home. Thick, suffocating smoke poured into the night sky as frantic neighbors gathered on the street, shouting that children were still trapped on the upper floor.
According to preliminary reports from the police department, the conflict began earlier in the evening as a severe verbal argument between the couple—identified as 34-year-old Marcus Vance and 31-year-old Sarah Vance. Witnesses told investigators that the altercation escalated rapidly, with loud screaming and the sound of breaking glass echoing throughout the neighborhood.
Investigators allege that during the peak of the confrontation, an accelerant was doused near the entrance of the home and ignited intentionally. Law enforcement officials have not yet specified which partner struck the match, but both adults are currently being held as co-conspirators in the catastrophic act.
While the fire raged through the ground floor, cutting off the main exit, five children—ranging in age from 2 to 11 years old—were asleep in their upstairs bedrooms.
Instinct and quick thinking from the oldest sibling saved their lives. Realizing the house was filling with toxic smoke, the 11-year-old child managed to guide his younger brothers and sisters to a second-story bedroom window. Courageous neighbors, hearing the children’s cries for help, rushed over with a heavy garden ladder, while a local police officer who arrived first on the scene helped catch the youngest child as they were lowered to safety.
“It was pure chaos,” said a neighbor who assisted in the rescue. “The smoke was so thick you couldn’t see, and you could hear the kids crying from the window. I couldn’t believe any parents could let things get to that point while their own children were inside.”
All five children were rushed to a nearby hospital to be treated for smoke inhalation and minor burns. Medical staff confirmed that all five are in stable condition and are expected to make a full physical recovery. Child Protective Services (CPS) has been notified and has taken emergency custody of the children to ensure their safety and well-being.
Marcus and Sarah Vance were arrested at the scene after officers found them outside the burning structure, still shouting at each other while paramedics attempted to evaluate them. Both suspects were booked into the county jail on multiple felony charges, including five counts of child endangerment, arson, and aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.

The couple remains held without bond, and their arraignment is scheduled for Friday morning.
