Nancy Guthrie Missing Update: Man Detained During Overnight Operation Near Search Area

A man was detained during a late-night traffic stop Friday as authorities carried out a large law-enforcement operation roughly two miles from the home of missing 84-year-old Nancy Guthrie, according to multiple media reports citing police sources. The stop came as SWAT teams and federal agents executed a search warrant nearby in connection with the ongoing disappearance investigation. The individual was pulled over near a fast-food restaurant during the operation and was being questioned in relation to the search warrant served in the area, according to a report by Fox News Digital. Officials also examined a vehicle at the scene.

Law-enforcement agencies including the FBI and the Pima County Sheriff’s Department converged on a residential area near East Orange Grove Road late Friday, blocking roads and keeping media at a distance while they pursued what officials described as an active lead in the case.

Investigators found a black glove near Nancy Guthrie’s home that resembles those worn by a masked individual seen in surveillance footage. This glove, along with DNA evidence from her property, is being analyzed for potential links to her abduction. The FBI has also been examining gloves recovered from a nearby area, indicating an extensive search for any forensic evidence that could lead to her recovery.

The operation unfolded about two miles from Guthrie’s Tucson-area residence and involved SWAT and forensic units searching a nearby property. Authorities confirmed the activity was directly tied to the investigation into Guthrie’s disappearance but declined to release detailed information at the FBI’s request.

Separate reports indicate that multiple people were detained during the search of a nearby home that same night. However, officials have not said whether any of those individuals, or the man stopped in traffic, are suspects, and no arrests have been formally announced.

Nancy Guthrie, the mother of NBC “Today” anchor Savannah Guthrie, have been missing since February 1 after evidence at her Tucson home suggested she may have been forcibly taken. Investigators have since pursued thousands of tips, examined surveillance footage of a masked intruder at her door and analysed DNA evidence collected at the scene.

A SWAT team from the Pima County, Arizona, Sheriff’s Department swarmed a residence near Guthrie’s home Friday evening.

More than two dozen vehicles – including SWAT and forensic units – were seen at the scene as authorities shut down the street, according to CNN. Brian Entin, Senior News Correspondent for CNN, reported that a vehicle was also searched. “This Range Rover is also being investigated and is now being towed away,” he wrote Friday to X. “A lot of moving parts right now.”

NewsNation reported that a woman and a man – possibly a mother and son – were ordered to exit the residence that was being searched. They claimed that a male was simultaneously detained nearby during a traffic stop, reportedly on his way to the same property.

Law enforcement officials have yet to comment on the flurry of police activity.

The Pima County Sheriff’s Office issued an update on X, saying, “Law enforcement activity is underway at a residence near E Orange Grove Rd & N First Ave related to the Guthrie case.”

They continued, “Because this is a joint investigation, at the request of the FBI – no additional information is currently available.”

Officials told CNN that investigators found DNA at Guthrie’s residence that does not belong to her or those close to her.

The masked suspect captured in doorbell footage has been described a 5’9”-5’10” tall male with an average build, wearing an Ozark Trail Hiker backpack.

Guthrie was reported missing February 1 and was last seen alive January 31. (RELATED: Man Claiming To Know Guthrie Abductor Doubles Ransom Demand In Third Email To TMZ)
