HAMMOND, LA — A quiet school morning was shattered by gunfire and “pure carnage” on Tuesday after a 13-year-old boy allegedly shot his father in the neck in the middle of a crowded carpool line before being tackled by a heroic officer as he marched toward the school building armed with a handgun.
The harrowing incident unfolded at approximately 7:30 AM at Tangipahoa Alternative School in Hammond, Louisiana. Witnesses described a scene of utter confusion that rapidly escalated into a life-or-death standoff.
According to police, the tragedy began with a “routine” domestic dispute. The teenager had reportedly refused to get out of his father’s vehicle to attend class. A School Resource Officer (SRO) and a police lieutenant were called to the car to intervene, attempting to de-escalate the situation and convince the boy to enter the building.
THE MOMENT OF TERROR
When the teen remained defiant, the father reportedly decided to end the confrontation and take his son back home. But as the vehicle began to pull away from the curb, a single, blood-curdling gunshot rang out.
Investigators say the 13-year-old pulled a firearm and shot his father directly in the neck from the passenger seat.
The wounded father instantly lost control of the vehicle, which careened across the street at high speed, narrowly missing other students before PLOWING into the living room of a nearby residential home.
A HERO INTERVENES
In a chilling sequence captured by witnesses, the teenager emerged from the smoking wreckage of the car, still clutching the handgun. Instead of fleeing, the youth reportedly began walking back toward the school campus—where nearly 250 students were beginning their day.
“He was walking toward the school with a purpose,” one witness stated.
Tragedy was only averted by the lightning-fast reactions of a veteran SRO. The officer “placed himself directly between the armed student and the school building,” according to Hammond Police Chief Edwin Bergeron Jr. The officer successfully disarmed the 13-year-old and took him into custody without a second shot being fired.
THE INNOCENT WITNESS
In a heartbreaking twist, police confirmed that the suspect’s five-year-old sibling was sitting in the backseat of the car during the entire ordeal. The young child witnessed the shooting of their father and the subsequent high-speed crash.
Miraculously, the five-year-old was physically unharmed and has since been released to the care of family members. The residents of the home that was struck by the vehicle were also uninjured, though the property sustained significant damage.
THE AFTERMATH
The father, whose identity has not been released, was rushed to a local trauma center in critical condition. In a miraculous update late Tuesday, officials confirmed he had been stabilized and is expected to survive.
Chief Bergeron hailed the SRO as a “true hero,” stating:
“His quick actions and bravery undoubtedly prevented a much larger tragedy. He didn’t hesitate to put himself in harm’s way to protect those children.”
The 13-year-old suspect is currently being held at the Florida Parish Juvenile Detention Center. Charges are pending as investigators work to determine the motive behind the attack and, crucially, how a middle-school-aged child gained access to a deadly weapon.
The school remained under a “hard lockdown” for several hours as forensic teams swept the area, but the perimeter has since been cleared. For the parents and students of Hammond, however, the “horror in the carpool line” is a nightmare they won’t soon forget.

Hammond police say teen shot father in school car line after argument
The school remains on lockdown as a precaution, and police ask the public to avoid the area.
The Hammond Police Department has taken a 13-year-old in custody in connection with a shooting near the Tangipahoa Alternative School Tuesday morning.
According to Hammond police, the shooting happened in the school carline around 7:39 a.m.
Police say that before the shooting, the 13-year-old boy and his father got into an argument. Officers say the boy did not want to go inside the school.
Due to the argument, the school resource officer responded to the carline, and the father of the boy decided to take his son home.
As the car began to drive out of the carline, the resource officer heard gunshots and saw the teen approaching the officer with a gun, according to police.
Hammond police say the father’s car then accelerated across the street into a home. There was a Pre-K-aged student in the backseat. That child was not injured and is now in the custody of another family member.
The home the father crashed into was damaged, but no one inside was hurt.
After the car crashed, police say the 13-year-old got out of the car and began walking toward the side door of the school with the gun.
The teen was taken into custody without incident, and the boy’s father was taken to North Oaks Medical Center and is considered critical at this time.
Officers have secured the scene, and there is no ongoing threat to public safety. The school was placed on lockdown as a precaution, but has since returned to normal operations.
The identity of the teen and father will not be released at this time. The teen will be taken to the Florida Parishes Juvenile Detention Center to be processed.
The school has placed counselors on campus for students who need to speak about the incident, according to school officials.
Due to the boy’s age, no information on his criminal history or behavior record at the school will be released.
“This type of violence is senseless and outrageous and sadly underscores why school resources officers are so important,” said Hammond Chief of Police Edwin Bergeron Jr. in an issued statement. “We are incredibly grateful that we had a SRO at the school to intervene and prevent further injuries.”
