From Fatal Error to Sinister Cover-Up: The Missing Evidence and Shocking Aftermath at Skeleton Bridge
LIMEIRA, SÃO PAULO — What began as a heartbreaking viral tragedy involving a 21-year-old traveler plunging 130 feet to her death has rapidly evolved into a chilling criminal investigation. Authorities in São Paulo are now piecing together a harrowing timeline that suggests the extreme sports operators responsible for Maria Eduarda Rodrigues de Freitas’s death did not just commit a fatal error—they allegedly attempted a cold-blooded cover-up before emergency sirens could even be heard.
The tragic incident, which occurred when operators launched Maria Eduarda off the Ponte do Esqueleto (Skeleton Bridge) without attaching her primary safety line, initially sparked global outrage over sheer negligence. However, explosive new witness testimonies broadcasted on TV Globo’s EPTV affiliate, combined with startling statements from the Civil Police, have completely shifted the case’s narrative from involuntary manslaughter to criminal obstruction and potentially indirect intentional homicide.

The Vanishing GoPro: A Vital Piece of Evidence Destroyed?
The most disturbing revelation centers around a missing piece of equipment. According to Chief Detective Andrea Dantas Levy, who is spearheading the case, Maria Eduarda was wearing a personal action camera (a GoPro) strapped around her neck to record a first-person point of view (POV) of her jump.
This device would contain the definitive audio and visual record of the operators’ actions and conversations in the final seconds before the drop. Yet, when forensic teams secured the scene, the camera was entirely missing.
Detective Levy confirmed that the suspects have provided highly contradictory statements regarding the device’s whereabouts. The glaring inconsistencies have led investigators to suspect that the camera was deliberately removed and destroyed to hide incriminating footage of the platform’s chaotic mismanagement.
“Like a Machine”: The Bizarre Post-Tragedy Cover-Up
The timeline of what occurred immediately after Maria Eduarda hit the canyon floor is where the narrative takes a sickening turn. Eyewitness Rafael Goulart, who was present at the scene, provided EPTV with a harrowing account of the crew’s behavior.
Instead of scrambling to provide CPR, calling emergency services, or showing any signs of human panic, the operators allegedly exhibited a terrifyingly calculated response. Goulart testified that the very first action taken by the crew upon reaching the victim was to strip the GoPro from her body.
The disturbing sequence did not end there. Witnesses report that the crew members immediately began removing their uniform shirts to conceal the logos of the organizing companies, Entre Cordas and Ih Voei. Moving “like machines,” they allegedly began hastily packing up their heavy ropes, harnesses, and carabiners into their vehicles, effectively tampering with an active, fatal crime scene.
A High-Stakes Police Standoff
The operators’ desperate rush to erase their digital and physical footprints almost culminated in their escape. According to eyewitness reports, the crew was fully packed and attempting to flee the Skeleton Bridge area before the first responders arrived.
The situation escalated to a breaking point when local law enforcement intercepted the suspects. A police officer reportedly had to draw a weapon, ordering the entire crew to the ground and strictly forbidding anyone associated with the jump companies from leaving the premises.

A Looming Legal Reckoning
This shocking cascade of events has forced Brazilian legal experts to re-evaluate the charges. The rapid transition from a botched safety check to an active effort to destroy evidence and flee a fatal scene pushes the boundaries of standard negligence.
Prosecutors are now looking beyond Involuntary Manslaughter. The deliberate tampering with a victim’s belongings and the attempt to abandon the scene could usher in charges of Obstruction of Justice, Tampering with Evidence, and Homicídio com dolo eventual—a legal term in Brazil meaning the perpetrators, through their extreme recklessness and subsequent actions, accepted the risk of producing a fatal outcome.
For the grieving family of Maria Eduarda, the pain of losing a vibrant, young bride-to-be is now compounded by the agonizing realization that in her final moments, the people entrusted with her life prioritized protecting their business over honoring her dignity. As the investigation deepens, the haunting final image of her cheerful smile stands in devastating contrast to the dark, calculated actions of those she left behind on the bridge.

A young woman has died in horrific circumstances after she was thrown 40m to her death when staff allegedly failed to attach a safety line as she attempted a rope jump from a bridge.
Disturbing vision of the tragedy posted on social media shows Maria Eduarda Rodrigues de Freitas assuming a superman pose as she is carried to the precipice of the so-called Skeleton Bridge in Limeira, Brazil before being hurled her off on Saturday. A rope can be seen coiled and unused on the ground nearby.

A witness who saw the fall told local media that people on the platform had shouted and tried to warn that Ms de Freitas was not secured to the safety rope.
Seconds after she is tossed from the bridge, voices can be heard in the background of the video shouting: “the rope, people, the rope!”.

In the lead up to the incident, the 21-year-old adventure seeker posted photos and videos on her social media accounts showing the bridge and her wristbands, according to local media.

In a chilling twist, alongside a photo of the company banner “Entre Cordas”, she had written: “Who was the crazy person who let me jump off a bridge?”.
Three men have been arrested and police are continuing to investigate.

Police officer Andréa Dantas said the two men in charge of preparing Ms de Freitas for the jump stated that they did not remember what happened moments before the fall.
“They can’t remember what the mistake was there, who should have put the rope in place, if there was no supervision. They can’t remember,” outlet Cidade On reported.
According to the Civil Police, it was not the first jump the day, with others participating beforehand without incident.
Rafael Gomes dos Santos, a lawyer representing the three detainees, said that rope jumping is not regulated, but it is also not prohibited. He said around 100 people attended Saturday’s jumping event and those involved had been practicing the sport for years without accidents.
