When Outlander Season 8 picked up the Faith storyline that many dreaded from the Season 7 finale, Diana Gabaldon spoke up. Sure, she may not have necessarily liked it, but she did admit that the idea was loosely based on one that she had herself. This isn’t the first time that Gabaldon has had an idea that the Outlander teams has run with, but it is the first time that it could have been an actual story.

Outlander Season 8 Episode 7 brought clear answers to the Faith mystery. How could she have survived all those years ago, and why didn’t Master Raymond get the baby to Claire? There are still some questions, but for many of us, those questions can likely rest easily as we have the important ones answered.

Diana Gabaldon Gave the ‘Outlander’ Team the Idea

Gabaldon has made it clear in the past that the idea of Faith surviving in Paris came from an idea that she had. She had an idea for a second graphic novel, one that never came to be. It was going to be set during the second book, and part of it would involve Master Raymond getting Faith and reviving her.

As she told Matt B. Roberts and Maril Davis this idea, it’s clear that they liked it. They could run with this magical mystery. After all, it’s not like there weren’t magical mysteries in the series already. There’s time travel that hasn’t fully been explained, and we just accept that!

Gabaldon never said if the whole Outlander Season 8 storyline would play out the way she envisioned for the graphic novel. After all, she wouldn’t want to spoil the TV storyline!

Faith’s Survival Has Finally Been Explained

After seven episodes of wondering, we finally got answers. It turns out that Jane knew a little of the story via her mother, and her mother had learned it from the woman she grew up with as a mother.

Master Raymond had managed to revive Faith, and then he took her to the lacemaker who lived across the road from his apothecary. He knew he could trust her to look after the baby, explaining that he would be back. If he couldn’t return, then she should go see Lady Broch Tuarach.

And so, all the theories that many Outlander fans had came true. Master Raymond couldn’t get back, and Claire had left Paris by the time the lacemaker went to find her. Faith had learned of the story growing up, as the lacemaker finally learned that Lady Broch Tuarach lived in the North Carolina mountains, and that’s where Faith was heading with her family at the time the ship was attacked.

It’s a bittersweet ending, but Claire and Jamie now know that Fanny is their granddaughter. On top of that, Fanny has learned who her biological grandparents are. A family has been reunited.

And yes, how Fanny knew the song also came up — that was also thanks to Master Raymond. This wouldn’t come from the graphic novel, but at least the answers have finally been given, and Master Raymond isn’t as evil as many were making him out to be.
