The FBI has released photographs and video footage of a masked individual as part of its investigation into the disappearance of Nancy Guthrie, prompting online speculation about the person’s identity — claims that authorities have not substantiated. The images and clips were made public on Tuesday in an appeal for information. FBI Director Kash Patel shared four black-and-white photographs and two short videos on the social media platform X.
The photos and videos show a man wearing gloves, a mask and a backpack at the front door of Guthrie’s home on the morning she disappeared. The individual’s eyes are visible through holes in the mask, and the footage shows the person appearing to tamper with the home’s doorbell camera.
Patel said the individual is armed, noting that at least one of the videos shows what appears to be a holstered gun. “Working with our partners — as of this morning, law enforcement has uncovered these previously inaccessible new images showing an armed individual appearing to have tampered with the camera at Nancy Guthrie’s front door the morning of her disappearance,” Patel wrote.
Shortly after the release, claims circulated online suggesting the person shown could be Tommaso Cioni, Guthrie’s son-in-law and the husband of her daughter, Annie Guthrie. A user on X wrote: “It’s 1000% Tommaso Cioni. Same exact build and facial hair (beard & mustache) Male, between 5’10 – 6’0, 230lbs. Weight is held in his chest and torso. Thinner arms. Thick legs.”
Drawing comparisons, another user commented: “Are those wrestling gloves because tommaso cioni is a wrestler.” A third person said: “Left hand has bumps on middle and ring fingers. Tommaso Cioni weara rings on both fingers in every picture I’ve seen. Masked man superimposed matches face shape (mask looks just as thick down near the chin indicating alot of facial hair underneath)”
However, there has been no official confirmation of the individual’s identity, and authorities have not named any suspect.
The Pima County Sheriff’s Office, which is leading the investigation, issued an identical statement to the FBI and said no media briefings were planned at this time. The images include the logo of Nest, a smart doorbell brand owned by Google.
Savannah Guthrie, the Today show co-anchor and Guthrie’s daughter, shared one of the photographs on Instagram, writing: “We believe she is still alive. Bring her home. Anyone with information, please contact 1-800-CALL-FBI (1-800-225-5324) or the Pima County Sheriff’s Department 520-351-4900.”

Nancy Guthrie, 84, was reported missing around noon on 1 February after she failed to attend a virtual church service. According to the Pima County Sheriff’s Office, she was last seen the previous evening at about 9:45 p.m., after dinner at her daughter’s home in Tucson, Arizona.
Her disappearance has triggered a large-scale search involving both state and federal law enforcement agencies.
Three news organisations have reported receiving a ransom note referring to Guthrie. NBC News said it reviewed a copy and found the contents consistent with descriptions provided by the FBI and other outlets. No law enforcement agency has confirmed the note’s authenticity.
In a video posted on Instagram on Monday, Savannah Guthrie said her family believed her mother was “still out there” and appealed for public assistance.
“We are at an hour of desperation, and we need your help,” she said.
