We are only two episodes from the end of Outlander season 8. Even though there are still many loose ends, Episode 8 is a welcome pause from the larger narrative and somewhat feels like a filler episode.
While “In the Forest” delivers one of the season’s most meaningful emotional payoffs yet, the episode feels overall unbalanced in choosing what to focus on, despite being so close to the end of the series.
William’s healing journey brings him to Fraser’s Ridge
The core of the episode is about healing: most of the characters we encounter spend the episode entirely on Fraser’s Ridge, a place that represented a new start for many, as well as a place for healing. The Ridge and its inhabitants act like a safe space for William, who arrives unexpectedly after his fight with Lord John. He claims to be there for Brianna, but it’s obvious — to Claire especially — that he’s been drawn back by his unfinished business with Jamie.
What follows is the slow unraveling of years of resentment and the rebuilding of their bond. While they’re hunting in the forest, William voices the question that’s been haunting him for years: “I am your son – how could you leave me?”
Jamie’s answer isn’t comforting, but it’s honest. He believed distance was the only way to protect his son from the consequences of his own past. The reconciliation that follows isn’t tidy. It’s messy, tearful, and incomplete, but it marks real progress between them. It begins to heal a wound that has been hurting since season 3.

The episode needed more Claire
While Episode 8 is an improvement from Episode 7, it doesn’t entirely escape criticism. One recurring issue for this last season is balance, both in screen presence and plot development. And it’s most evident when it comes to Claire.
Despite being the series’ central figure, she spends much of the episode supporting other characters’ journeys rather than driving her own. Claire’s words make William open his eyes and finally have a heart-to-heart with Jamie, but it comes at the cost of sidelining a character that used to anchor the show.
And what about Fergus? We never see Claire mourning his death or even acknowledging him as her son (which Jamie does, in a very touching scene). The same can be said for other characters that are supposed to be close to Fergus, like his own siblings. His tragic passing unceremonially fades away because of the implicit time jump that happens in this episode. The whole matter makes for a substandard way to treat one of the most beloved characters of the series in its last few episodes.
There’s also the feeling that the episode is juggling too much. Buck’s time-hopping, Jamie’s military drills in preparation for war, and the revelation that Fanny is a time traveler are all major developments that are introduced and advanced way too quickly. As a result, they don’t have the space they need to fully land: it feeds our growing sense that the plot is widening when it (unfortunately) needs to close.

“For my dearest Deadeye”
Around the central arc involving William, the show continues to prepare its audience for the upcoming battle at King’s Mountain. Brianna’s engineering skills become increasingly important as she develops a more advanced rifle. When she mentions that Frank used to call her “Deadeye,” Jamie realizes that the book is dedicated to Brianna.
Instead of a taunting ghost, Frank and his words become a warning: Jamie has all the information needed to fight and win the battle, even if he won’t be able to survive it.
From what we can see in the preview for Episode 9 (which will air on May 8), the battle won’t be happening until the finale. That means we’ll have one more episode of tension and preparation. Hopefully, we’ll get more answers and more loose ends tied up in the next episode, aiming for an emotion-filled series finale.
