CBS has dropped the first full trailer for ‘Y: Marshals’, and with it comes a clue that may answer one of the biggest lingering questions left after ‘Yellowstone’: what happened to Monica Dutton? While the network has remained tight-lipped about Kelsey Asbille’s absence from the official cast list, the new footage may have finally revealed why she’s missing from Kayce Dutton’s next chapter. Created by Taylor Sheridan alongside longtime collaborators David C. Glasser and Spencer Hudnut, ‘Y: Marshals’ picks up where ‘Yellowstone’ left off. After the explosive series finale, Kayce Dutton (Luke Grimes) walked away from the iconic ranch life for good.
Having sold the Dutton Ranch with his sister Beth, Kayce moved his family to East Camp, hoping that he, Monica, and their son, Tate, could leave the violence and constant battles of the ‘Yellowstone’ world behind. But peace never lasts long in Sheridan’s Montana. The spinoff thrusts Kayce back into the line of fire when he’s recruited to join the U.S. Marshals Service. Their targets? The ruthless gangs, cross-border cartels, and extremist factions terrorizing the rural landscape of “God’s country”. Fans will spot familiar faces, including Gil Birmingham reprising his role as Thomas Rainwater and Mo Brings Plenty returning as Mo, as per Collider.
The series also introduces new U.S. Marshals, including Belle Skinner (Arielle Kebbel) and Andrea Cruz (Ash Santos). However, the biggest shock lies not in who returns, but who doesn’t. The trailer opens with a somber narration from Kayce reflecting on the weight of his past. “I’ve lost my teammates, my parents, even my brothers,” he says, as he climbs a hillside to kneel before a freshly dug grave. While the trailer is careful not to name the person he’s mourning, the location and context offer a major clue. The Dutton family cemetery sits on the land the family no longer owns, yet the grave Kayce visits isn’t there.
Instead, the backdrop resembles East Camp’s rugged terrain, the last place Kayce, Monica, and Tate lived together, according to ScreenRant. The implication is devastatingly clear: this may be Monica’s grave. It’s a subtle but powerful signal, and one that helps explain why Asbille is not part of the series’ main cast. Removing Monica from the narrative, whether through death or an unexplained separation, clears the path for ‘Y: Marshals’ to reframe Kayce as a man unmoored, driven once again into a world of danger rather than trying to escape it.
Monica’s absence frees the story to explore Kayce’s re-entry into violence, not as a protector of a ranch, but as a marshal with nothing left to lose. And that emotional void may be the fuel ‘Y: Marshals’ uses to turn him into a full-blown action lead. Still, trailers are crafted to mislead as much as they reveal. CBS may have seeded this imagery to stir fan speculation, meaning Monica’s ultimate fate could still come with an unexpected twist once the season premieres on March 1, 2026.
