A Washington father left for work in the morning with an eerie feeling he couldn’t shake — and hours later, he returned home to a devastating scene: his wife, adult son and family dog had all been fatally shot.

Deputy Carly Cappetto, a spokesperson for the Pierce County Sheriff’s Office, said in a Facebook post that deputies were called just before 1:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 27, to a home in Vaughn on the Key Peninsula after the man reported finding the three deceased.

Responding deputies discovered a woman, her 24-year-old adult son and a dog inside a bedroom, all with apparent gunshot wounds, according to KING 5, KOMO News and the Tacoma News Tribune.

A firearm was recovered from the room, the outlets reported, citing investigators.

Cappetto added there are no outstanding suspects and that the situation is contained to the home.

Cappetto said the couple lived in the home and had allowed their adult son — who did not live there — to stay overnight on Monday, Jan. 26. The son had allegedly been struggling with addiction and mental health challenges, she said.

“When Dad left to work this morning he wasn’t very comfortable with that, and then decided to come home — and unfortunately he came home to his wife and his adult son deceased,” Cappetto told KOMO.

“It’s tragic, not only did this father lose his wife, he lost his son — and [their] family dog, too,” she said, per KING 5.

Authorities said the husband has been cooperative as the investigation remains active.

Cappetto said additional details will be released as they become available.
