Charlie Kirk’s parents and widow departed the courtroom during a preliminary hearing for Tyler Robinson as the shooting was discussed.
Robinson is charged with killing Kirk, who was fatally shot while speaking at a rally at Utah Valley University on Sept. 10, 2025.
A preliminary hearing expected to last several days began in a Utah courtroom on Monday, July 6.
According to the Associated Press, Kirk’s widow, Erika, and parents were in attendance but departed the courtroom as former Utah Valley University police officer Chris Bagley began testifying about Kirk’s arrival on campus the day he was killed.
Bagley, per the AP, testified that he heard a gunshot, which caused chaos.
The New York Times reported that Erika returned to the courtroom following a break.
Prior to the hearing, the Kirk family released a statement on social media.
“Every court proceeding serves as a painful reminder of his death and the loss that has irrevocably impacted our lives and the lives of his children,” the Kirk family said in the statement. “We remain deeply grateful for the support, prayers, and kindness we have received. This outpouring has sustained us during the darkest days of our lives.”
Robinson is charged with aggravated murder in connection with the killing of Kirk, the well-known right-wing activist who co-founded Turning Point USA.
The AP also reported that Donald Trump Jr. appeared in the courtroom for the preliminary hearing.
