MEIGS COUNTY, OHIO — In a stunning and grim breakthrough, authorities have arrested three individuals—including the victim’s girlfriend and her parents—in connection with the brutal homicide of 20-year-old Ethan Vernon.

The Raid on Pleasanton Road

Taken into custody at the scene were:
-
Sarah Haning (Ethan’s girlfriend)
-
Randy Haning (Father)
-
Beverly Haning (Mother)
All three family members have been indicted by a grand jury on a chilling list of severe felony charges, revealing the horrific scope of the crime:
-
Murder
-

-
Tampering with Evidence
-
Gross Abuse of a Corpse
-
Obstructing Justice (Multiple counts)
Currently, agents from the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation (BCI) remain on the property, meticulously processing the Haning residence for additional forensic evidence.
A Lengthy Path to Justice
Ethan Vernon’s nightmare began on December 11, 2025, when he left work and went to visit Sarah Haning, his girlfriend of over three years. He never returned. The following day, his truck was found torched on Hemlock Grove Road with his body hidden in the backseat and a gun placed in the front seat—a clear attempt to stage the scene and destroy evidence.
For nearly 11 agonizing weeks, his family waited for DNA confirmation, which finally came on February 27, 2026. Throughout the investigation, Sarah Haning’s behavior—including cutting off contact with Ethan’s family, changing her name online, and avoiding his memorial vigil—drew intense public suspicion. Today, those suspicions were validated in court indictments.

“A Significant Milestone”
The sweeping arrests bring a long-awaited sense of justice to the Vernon family, who have spent months pleading for answers.
“This investigation has been a lengthy and complex effort, and today’s arrests are the result of countless hours of work by our detectives,” Sheriff Scott Fitch said in an official statement. “While these arrests mark a significant milestone, the investigation remains active, and we will continue to pursue every available lead to ensure justice is served for Ethan Vernon and his family.”
Sheriff Fitch extended his gratitude to Athens County Sheriff Rodney Smith, the Athens County SRT, and the Ohio BCI for their critical assistance in bringing the suspects into custody safely.
The Haning family members are currently being held pending their arraignments. Authorities note that additional information will be released as the ongoing investigation permits.
Justice is finally moving forward for Ethan Vernon. We will continue to follow this story as court proceedings begin.
