The stakes have never been higher for Beulah Jackson (Annette Bening).
In season 1, episode 7 of Dutton Ranch, which aired on Friday, June 19, things come to a head at the 190th anniversary party for 10-Petal Ranch.
While Carter (Finn Little) stumbles into some trouble after a rejection from love interest Oreana (Natalie Alyn Lind), Beulah makes a big decision that has far-reaching — and controversial — repercussions.
The episode also gave fans a new understanding of Beulah through multiple flashbacks to her teenage years in 1981 in Fort Worth.
So, what happened during Dutton Ranch season 1, episode 7? Here’s a breakdown of everything that unfolded.
Why does a bar fight break out?

All the 10-Petal ranch hands are off the premises for the party, after Beulah opened a tab for them at the local saloon. Zachariah (Marc Menchaca) and Azul (J. R. Villarreal) are there too, and things get tense during a game of cards.
After a cowboy accused two of the ranch hands of cheating, he said, “Y’all are as crooked and dirty as that 10-Petal you work for.” He ran off when he saw how many 10-Petal hands were in the bar, but then he came back with his own backup.
A full-on brawl broke out in the bar, with chairs breaking over people’s heads, and Zachariah and Azul joined in, too.
The victory wasn’t all that sweet. As they celebrated, Austin (Sterlin English) made a bold statement and said that the cowboy wasn’t “wrong” when he called 10-Petal crooked and dirty.
“They ain’t wrong. 10-Petal’s dirty, corrupt,” Austin said. “We’re all f—ed. And we never say s— about it — not to each other, not to anyone.”
Tommy (James Eddie) advised that Austin “let it go,” but he wouldn’t back down. “All we’ve been doing is letting it go. Now Chet’s gone missing too?”
“I’m saying this as a friend: shut the f— up, Austin,” Tommy told him.
Who does Beulah name as heir to 10-Petal Ranch?

With the help of Oreana, Rob-Will (Jai Courtney) made a surprise return at the anniversary party. He put Beulah on the spot in her office, as he told her, “My name is Robert William Jackson III. It’s my f—ing name, and this ranch is my legacy.”
“I’m everything you’ve always wanted me to be. Clear-eyed, ruthless, a killer. Hell, I am the image of your father,” Rob-Will said.
He made it clear that naming him heir to the ranch is “not just the right thing, it’s the only thing,” as he told Beulah, “I’ll never let Kino have it — ever.”
She understood the severity of his threat, and, after tearing up in her office, decided to name Rob-Will heir. “I made a promise to my daddy before he passed, one that I finally intend to keep tonight. Some of y’all might say it’s been too long coming, that I’ve been too desperate to hang onto the one thing that we never seem to get enough of: time,” Beulah said as she addressed the party. “As of tonight, I intend to pass the reins on to the next generation. In five years, Robert William Jackson III will be giving this speech as head of 10-Petal.”
The decision had far-reaching repercussions, and Joaquin (Juan Pablo Raba) immediately left, though not before Rob-Will rubbed it in his face — and confessed that he orchestrated Chet’s deadly attack on Joaquin.
What happens to Beulah?

The tensions from the night boil over as the episode ends. When a very drunk Carter stumbled out of Beulah’s house holding a bull’s head and then smashed it, Beulah’s stress got the best of her.
As Rip (Cole Hauser) dragged Carter away, Beulah got a sharp pain in her left side and collapsed. Oreana and Everett (Ed Harris) rushed to her side, and Everett called for a medevac as he comforted her. “Hang on, B. It’s okay.”
The moment came after a night of gentle flirting between Beulah and Everett that suggested the pair could be closer to rekindling a romance. At one point, Everett gives Beulah a meaningful look while agreeing some people just fit, and during the party, the two seem to lean in as if they might kiss, before clasping hands instead.
After Beulah’s collapse, a flashback played of her as a teenager, which revealed the identity of Rob-Will’s father. Earlier in the episode, a night out in 1981 saw young Beulah and her friends on a night out in Fort Worth, which took a turn when she was assaulted by a man she met on the dance floor. In the second flashback, she learned she was pregnant and went to confront the man at his trailer — and killed him.
