On the day disgraced lawyer Alex Murdaugh was scheduled to testify in a South Carolina court where he was accused of killing his wife Maggie and son Paul, former Colleton County Clerk of Court Rebecca “Becky” Hill was “excited,” recalls one juror.

“You could see it in her face,” said Myra Crosby, whose dismissal from the jury just before deliberations contributed to questions about Hill, who ultimately pleaded guilty in December 2025 to perjury-related charges.

“She said, ‘Oh my gosh, y’all, this is going to be an epic day, Alex is going to take the stand,’” Crosby, who was dubbed the “egg juror,” said in Netflix’s Instadocs: Alex Murdaugh, Unconvicted, which premiered Saturday, May 30.

“She told us that we were all going to be famous and she said, ‘But I want y’all to listen carefully. You need to pay very close attention to Alex’s body movement, his motions, and, you know, don’t be fooled by what the defense says. You’re going to hear a lot of things.’ And when she said that, I just kind of questioned to myself, did she just tell me that they’re going to lie?”

After a six- week trial in which he took the stand in his own defense, Murdaugh, 57, was found guilty by the jury of fatally shooting Maggie, 51, and Paul, 22, at the family’s 1,770-acre hunting property in Islandton, S.C. in June 2021.

The embattled former attorney was subsequently sentenced to two consecutive life terms behind bars.

After his conviction, Murdaugh’s legal team filed an appeal, accusing Hill of improperly influencing the jurors who convicted him. They claimed Hill allegedly made comments to the jury that violated his Sixth Amendment right to a fair and impartial trial.

On May 13, 2026, the South Carolina Supreme Court overturned the convictions, pointing to Hill’s “improper external influences on the jury,” and ordered Murdaugh to be retried.

South Carolina Attorney General Alan Wilson disagreed with the court overturning Murdaugh’s convictions.

“The defense’s job is to muddy the waters to throw out a thousand conspiracy theories and get people thinking about everything else except about the facts of the case,” Wilson said in the docuseries. “I believe we did it right the first time. It was not our fault this thing was reversed. The Supreme Court themselves says this falls solely on the shoulders of one person.”

He added: “That was the Colleton County Clerk of Court, Becky Hill. Obviously, none of us knew about it. When we became aware, I sent that case to an independent prosecutor who came to the conclusion that Ms. Hill’s conduct was inappropriate, but it was harmless error as it related to the conviction, but the Supreme Court went another direction and we’re gonna act accordingly.”

In December, Hill pleaded guilty to perjury, obstruction of justice and misconduct. She was not charged with jury tampering.

According to The State, she was subsequently sentenced to probation, 100 hours of community service and ordered to pay $11,880 in restitution. She has denied improperly influencing the jury.

Murdaugh remains in prison, where he is currently serving concurrent federal and state sentences for various financial crimes, including stealing from clients and friends.
