THE OUTLANDER UNIVERSE IS NOT OVER: 5 MIND-BLOWING CROSSOVERS ARE ABOUT TO CHANGE EVERYTHING!

Outlander fans, this is the end! Twelve years, eight seasons, and a million renditions of “The Skye Boat Song” later, Outlander Season 8 Episode 10 marks the finale of Jamie (Sam Heughan) and Claire’s (Caitríona Balfe) epic love story.

A fiery cross burns on Fraser’s Ridge, reminiscent of Season 5’s opener, aptly titled “The Fiery Cross.” It’s a call to action for the men of the Ridge, a looming reminder of the battle ahead. And then the opening credits roll for one last “Skye Boat Song,” and it’s back to the original Raya Yarbrough version from Season 1. We’ve been hearing Annie Lennox’s rendition all season, but it’s lovely to return to the original one last time.

Jamie, fated to die at the Battle of Kings Mountain, draws up his will. He leaves everything to Claire, save for some exceptions. He leaves two thousand acres on the Ridge to Brianna (Sophie Skelton) and his tools and weapons to Young Ian (John Bell).

Other things, from books to whiskey, are left to Jamie’s grandchildren, extended family members like Marsali (Lauren Lyle), and Jamie’s son William (Charles Vandervaart). Seen in a montage over Jamie’s narration of his will, this is the last we see of Marsali and William. Sob! At least they go on to live (presumably) happy lives beyond Outlander Season Episode 10.

On the day of Jamie’s departure for Kings Mountain, he and Claire enjoy a quiet morning, pretending to forget the fate that lies ahead. Jamie says he hopes he might be able to return as a ghost. Claire asks if he’d look in on her if he were a ghost. “Just a wee glance,” Jamie smiles, “I wouldn’t want to frighten you.”

Everything culminates in Outlander Season 8 Episode 10, but some questions still remain.

Claire wonders if her parents’ ghosts ever watch her. We, the Outlander fandom, can watch her parents ourselves in the prequel Blood of My Blood. Claire tells Jamie about the day she first time-traveled. She went to the stones at Craigh na Dun in search of forget-me-nots, touched the magical stones, then fell through time. “And the rest is our history,” she says.

Brianna asks Roger (Richard Rankin) to return from the battle in one piece and to bring Jamie home. Fanny (Florrie May Wilkinson) is distraught that Jamie and Claire are going because everyone she’s ever loved has died tragically. Claire says they can hold each other in their hearts.

Jamie gives Brianna the book Frank (Tobias Menzies) wrote. Jamie says he’s grateful to Frank for raising Brianna. “No matter how the story ends, it will all have been worth it,” Jamie says. As Brianna holds back tears, Jamie says that even though she looks nothing like Claire, they have the same strength in their looks of love and care.

Jamie, Claire, Roger, Young Ian, and the rest of the Ridge militia leave. As they approach Kings Mountain, Jamie says he’s not afraid to die, but wishes he could see his home again. “We will see the Ridge again,” Claire says hopefully.

Benjamin Cleveland (Turlough Convery) alerts Jamie that redcoat leader Major Ferguson (Charles Aitken) should be easy to spot, since he’s riding a white stallion. Frank’s narration in his book notes that thousands of British soldiers are at Kings Mountain, but only 900 patriots are there.

The battle featured in Outlander Season 8 Episode 10 isn’t as memorable as it could be.

Jamie asks if coming to Kings Mountain was a betrayal to Claire. “Only if you die,” Claire says. Jamie recounts how Brianna’s young daughter Mandy (Rosa Morris) can feel the presences of Claire, Roger, Brianna, and her brother Jim (Blake Johnston-Miller) at a distance, but not Jamie.

Jamie asks three things of Claire if he dies. First, he wants a Catholic Mass for his soul. Sounds simple enough, but Claire says the nearest priest is likely in Maryland, which is pretty darn far away when you’re traveling from North Carolina via horse and carriage.

Second, Mandy had said that her baby brother Davy is Jamie. Jamie theorizes that this means that Davy can’t time-travel, because Jamie can’t, either. Jamie suggests Claire, Roger, Brianna, Mandy, and Jem go back to the 1900s, and leave Davy with Young Ian and Rachel (Izzy Meikle-Small).

Claire rejects this idea. Brianna would never leave Davy behind. Claire says she feels at home in the 1770s and wants to stay in that time to feel Jamie’s presence. She also promises to honor Jamie’s third and final request: “Remember me.”

We’ve been preparing for Jamie to die all season, but there are still surprises left in store.

Sam Heughan in Outlander Season 8 Episode 10

They spend their last night together making love. It’s meant to be tender, but it’s not a standout among their once-frequent sex scenes. At least we’ll always have “The Wedding” from Season 1.

Jamie gives a rousing speech to the men about the impending fight, encouraging them to fight “not for gold or glory, but for our families and for our freedom.” Jamie asks Roger to say a blessing on them all. Jamie kisses Claire goodbye, and Claire’s visibly angry as he leaves. Their chemistry is a constant in Outlander, and thank goodness for it! Claire and Roger head back to the patriots’ camp.

There’s not a tremendous sense of Outlander Season 8 Episode 10 being the series finale, given how many episodes have been devoted to battles, the threat of death, or even that time Jamie was presumed dead for roughly one episode in Season 7.

As the battle begins, it feels a lot like other Outlander colonial battles (Alamance in Season 5, Monmouth in Season 7). No battle has quite lived up to the battle of Culloden (Seasons 2-3) in terms of scale and stakes. Sure, Jamie’s fated to die here at Kings Mountain, but has anything been as compelling or terrifying as his showdown with Black Jack Randall (Tobias Menzies) at Culloden? We’ve barely seen Ferguson this season; he doesn’t feel like a huge threat.

At camp, Claire decides to head back to the battle site. Roger tries to stop her, but a Fraser can’t really be stopped (he knows this from years of being married to Brianna), so he heads out with her. Back on the Ridge, Fanny encourages Brianna, Rachel, and Lizzie (Caitlin O’Ryan) to keep their spirits up in honor of their loved ones fighting in the battle. It’s a sweet moment of sisterhood among them all.

Joy is short-lived once the battle begins.

Still from Outlander Season 8 Episode 10

The battle is brutal and bloody, but again, not nearly as tense as Culloden. Kings Mountain should rival Culloden’s scope, but with its primary villain largely offscreen in this season (and barely present in Outlander Season 8 Episode 10 itself), there’s no overwhelming feeling of a series-finale-level threat.

Roger heads back to camp with some of the wounded men. Claire’s bag of medical supplies falls off as she climbs the mountain, but she’s too desperate to get to Jamie to get it back. As she climbs, the redcoats announce their retreat, and Claire finds Jamie as the patriots cheer.

Their joy is short-lived. Ferguson approaches, wielding a sword while riding his stallion. Claire warns Jamie, who knocks Ferguson off the horse. The patriots capture Ferguson, and a relieved Claire and Jamie embrace. “Frank was wrong,” Claire cries, grateful Jamie’s survived the battle despite what Frank’s book said. She hesitantly leaves to tend the wounded back at camp.

Jamie approaches Ferguson, asking for his formal declaration of surrender. “I will never surrender,” Ferguson hisses. He pulls out a concealed gun and shoots Jamie, who collapses. The Ridge men kill Ferguson in retaliation. Claire, sensing something’s wrong, runs back to Jamie. With no medical supplies, she can’t save him. Jamie tells her he’s not afraid to die, asks for her forgiveness, and dies.

Sam Heughan in Outlander Season 8 Episode 10

Balfe’s performance is especially moving as Claire helplessly clutches Jamie’s body and sobs. Delirious in her grief, she clings to him for hours, insisting he’s just resting. She stays beside him overnight as everyone, including a devastated Young Ian and Roger, heads back to camp.

In the morning, Roger tries to persuade Claire to let him move Jamie’s body for burial. “Let’s take him home,” he says. “He is home,” Claire whispers. Roger leaves, knowing, as always, that he can’t convince any of the Frasers to do something they don’t want to do. An extended version of “The Skye Boat Song” plays as Claire continues holding Jamie.

And then, we return to Scotland, 1945. As seen in Outlander Season 1 Episode 1, Frank sees Jamie’s ghost observing Claire from afar the night before she travels through time. Jamie’s ghost, teary-eyed, heads for Craig na Dun, touching the very stone that will soon transport Claire to Scotland, 1743. A few forget-me-nots spontaneously grow at the foot of the stone as Jamie’s ghost leaves.

There’s more throwbacks to come. An emotional montage of Jamie and Claire’s key moments (their friendship, wedding, Jamie rescuing Claire from Black Jack, visiting Lallybroch, losing their daughter Faith, Claire’s return after 20 years away, building Fraser’s Ridge, and everything in between) plays. Cue the tears!

The end really isn’t the end, after all…and that’s vexing.

Sam Heughan and Caitríona Balfe in Outlander Season 8 Episode 10

We return to Claire cradling Jamie’s body, but something’s different. Her hair is now completely white. A streak of her dark hair turned white in Outlander Season 8 Episode 3 after she utilized some unknown forces of magic. Could that be the case here, too?

As the camera closes in on the white-haired Claire holding Jamie, both Jamie’s and Claire’s eyes open, and they gasp. Fade to black. That’s the end of Outlander!

Okay, not quite. There’s a cute post-credit scene featuring the series’ author, Diana Gabaldon, telling a fan about a leather journal that’s been a source of inspiration. It’s Claire’s journal from Outlander Season 8 Episode 9! It’s a cute, cheeky coda, especially as Balfe has joked that Gabaldon might really be Claire.

After eight dramatic, romantic, century-spanning seasons, Outlander‘s finale underwhelms in scope. Outlander Season 8 Episode 10 is thrilling yet doesn’t meet the emotional stakes necessary for a series finale. The unresolved mystery of Claire’s magical abilities, the lack of follow-up about Fanny as a possible time traveler, and the random line about a priest in Maryland all feel like there’s another season still ahead.

Still, it’s been a compelling eight seasons. Balfe and Heughan show as a dynamic pair whose chemistry never faltered. They’ve carried the show, and they carried the finale, too. Farewell, Jamie and Claire!
