‘Outlander’ Series Finale Review: A Disappointing End to a Lackluster Final Season
LOS ANGELES — The final episode of the hit series Outlander has officially concluded the 12-year journey of Jamie and Claire Fraser, but it leaves fans with more regret than satisfaction. In a recent review for Forbes, critic Erik Kain described the final chapter as a disappointing farewell that caps off an already lackluster eighth season.
Despite featuring a few emotional moments and a poetic closing scene, the finale reportedly leaves too many lingering issues. According to Kain, the episode’s narrative lacks emotional weight and exposes significant plot holes, failing to serve as a fitting conclusion for one of television’s most epic historical dramas.
Outlander debuted on Starz in September 2014, spanning eight seasons. Over the past decade, the time-traveling romance between Scottish warrior Jamie Fraser (Sam Heughan) and WWII-era doctor Claire (Caitriona Balfe) built a massive and fiercely loyal fanbase. However, critics note the show’s quality dropped significantly in its final stretch.
The penultimate episode had briefly raised hopes, receiving positive feedback for effectively resolving the storylines surrounding Lord John Grey, Jamie, and William. Yet, that short-lived improvement wasn’t enough to salvage Season 8 as a whole, which was plagued by pacing issues and rushed plot developments leading up to the finale.
