The clearing went silent.

My father’s face twitched like he’d been slapped by a dead woman. His mouth opened, but nothing came out except a wet little breath. “No,” Gideon said. “You are.”

“He did,” my father snapped.

“You told me the girl wanted taken back.”
My father’s eyes slid to me.
And there it was.
