Rob Reiner’s son Nick Reiner was likely set to inherit millions from his famous father, but legal experts explain to Us that he won’t see a dime following his arrest for murder.

Rahmani tells Us, “Under the slayer rule, a child who kills their parents cannot inherit from their estate.”
“That means they can’t take under a will, trust, life insurance, or as any other kind of beneficiary. The law presumes the killer predeceased their parents,” Rahmani — who does not work with the Reiner family — said. “A murder conviction in criminal court is enough to trigger the rule. A probate judge can also apply it.”
Rahmani explained that if the individual is convicted, “the slayer rule automatically applies.” However, he also noted that a probate judge, who oversees the distribution of a deceased person’s assets, can apply the slayer rule “while the criminal case is pending an even without a conviction.”
Attorney Rachael Bennett, however, notes that there is a loophole. “If he is convicted of murder, he would be legally disqualified from inheriting anything from his parents’ estate. There is a potential loophole here, though. The law requires someone to have intentionally killed their victim to be disinherited,” she explained. “So, if he is found not guilty due to insanity, he could be allowed to inherit because his insanity would negate the intentionality required to trigger the slayer statute.”
As Us previously reported, the famed director and his wife were found dead with stab wounds inside their six-bedroom, six-bathroom, 5,245-square-foot mansion in Brentwood, California, worth an estimated $14 million. The couple shared three children: Nick, a son; Jake, and a daughter, Romy. Rob also had an adoptive daughter named Tracy, whom he shared with his ex-wife, Penny Marshall.
Nick, who is being held at a Los Angeles County jail without bond, was arrested on charges of murder.
“It is with profound sorrow that we announce the tragic passing of Michele and Rob Reiner,” Rob and Michele’s family said in a statement. “We are heartbroken by this sudden loss, and we ask for privacy during this unbelievably difficult time.”
Over the years, Nick has been open about his struggles with drug addiction, and revealed that he spent a period of time living on the streets.
The night before Rob and Michele were found dead, the couple attended a Christmas party at Conan O’Brien’s home. Rob and Michele brought Nick with them to the event. A source told Us that Nick acted “creepily” at the party and kept going up to guests asking if “they were famous.” A source told TMZ that Rob and his dad had a “loud argument” before Rob and Michele left the event.
Another source told Us that Nick had “always been hostile and volatile” toward his family over the years.
The source explained that Nick’s “problems were going on for so long, so while everyone is in a state of shock right now, it’s not entirely surprising.”
“A lot of his anger was directed at his parents for many, many years,” the source added. “They did everything a parent could possibly do to help him. Even in his younger years, they really tried to get him help.”
