Daytona Beach Spring Break Crowds: Police Confirm 133 Arrests, 4 Shootings Off Beach

Authorities are investigating several shootings across Daytona Beach, Florida, during a busy spring break weekend, though officials say none occurred on the beach despite viral social media claims. Deputies with the Volusia County Sheriff’s Office reported 133 arrests connected to spring break crowds, including 84 in the Daytona Beach area and 49 in nearby New Smyrna Beach.

In a March 16 statement early Monday posted on X, the sheriff’s office said “there were no shootings on the beach this weekend,” addressing widely shared videos showing crowds running along the shoreline that sparked speculation that gunfire had erupted on the sand.

Mike Chitwood, sheriff of Volusia County, also briefed the media later on Monday regarding law enforcement operations as large spring break crowds gathered across the region. Police body camera footage also captured events on the beach, which was released on Monday.

Officials said the panic seen in widely shared videos was not caused by gunfire. According to the sheriff’s office, the commotion began after people heard sounds like crushed water bottles or saw others running from incoming tides, prompting large portions of the crowd to flee.

“There were no shootings on the beach this weekend,” stated the sheriff’s office. “Widespread videos posted online this weekend falsely claimed crowds were running from shots fired. These videos were also picked up by news media.”

However, the Daytona Beach Police Department is investigating four separate shooting incidents that occurred elsewhere in the city late Friday and Saturday, officials said.

The first incident occurred at 12:15 a.m. Saturday at 308 Seabreeze Ave., where police received a report that a single shot had been fired inside a club. Officials said no one was struck.

A second shooting was reported at 12:44 a.m. Saturday at 244 N. Nova Road, where an 18-year-old man from Gainesville was shot and injured.

Later Saturday night, officers responded around 10:47 p.m. to the area of Kingston and Flanders avenues, where a 59-year-old Daytona Beach man was shot and injured.

The fourth incident occurred at 11:15 p.m. Saturday at 2 S. Atlantic Ave., where authorities said a 19-year-old woman from Atlanta was shot and injured.

Officials have not released the victims’ conditions or provided details about possible suspects.

In addition, authorities said deputies also managed crowds of roughly 2,000 people attending the “Hands Up Guns Down” event at the Volusia County Fairgrounds and Big Daddy’s Block Party in DeLand, both of which ended without major incidents.

In a separate case not connected to spring break crowds, a police officer from South Daytona was shot by a fleeing suspect on Interstate 95. Authorities also said a Port Orange Police Department officer was fired on while responding to a disturbance call.

“The Sheriff’s Office is aware of upcoming Spring Break events being promoted on social media and is working with city government and law enforcement partners to address concerns,” stated the press release, adding that more information will be available soon.

Deputies arrest 84 spring breakers in Daytona Beach 1st weekend

Volusia Sheriff Mike Chitwood wants to declare a special event zone for next weekend to crack down on social media driven events.

There were plenty of guns among the thousands of spring breakers on Daytona Beach over the weekend but there was no shooting, Volusia Sheriff Mike Chitwood said March 16.

Chitwood said deputies made a total of 133 arrests on the first weekend of spring break with 84 arrests in Daytona Beach and 49 in New Smyrna Beach.

In a press conference, he said social media videos claiming spring breakers were running due to gunshots were incorrect. Instead, he said beachgoers were crushing water bottles, which sounded like gunshots, prompting others to run.

6 guns seized from Daytona Beach spring break crowds

Deputies seized six guns, including two from one adult and a stolen gun from a juvenile, Chitwood said.

He reported 20 encounters when deputies questioned someone for carrying an open container and the person volunteered having a gun in their backpack. All of the encounters were adults.

“It’s a new generation in dealing with spring break,” Chitwood said, adding that there were a lot of people who had guns “on top of the bad guys” who had guns.

Deputies did not see anyone open carrying a gun, he said.

“But what’s more disheartening and people need to understand is everybody can carry a gun in Florida. Doesn’t matter the color of your skin.”

A person must be 21 or older to carry a firearm.

Chitwood also said it was not a problem as long as the person could legally carry a gun.

“And there’s nothing wrong with that. They can carry conceal. They can carry a weapon open carry,“ Chitwood said.

Chitwood said he had more than 50 deputies in the crowd between the Main Street Pier and Seabreeze Boulevard.

Daytona Beach spring breakers contacted by deputies were polite

“People might not want to hear this but everybody who we came in contact was absolutely polite,” Chitwood said. “And they understood why they were being arrested.”

He said no one tried to interfere with deputies making an arrest.

But Chitwood said he wants the Daytona Beach City Commission to agree to have its police department enforce a special event zone for next weekend.

“Hopefully, the city will get in line with me and we’re going to declare that special event zone, so then I can double that number with Daytona Beach and then we can really, really crack down,” Chitwood said.

He said law enforcement tried but was unable to determine if anyone was promoting the spring break crowd so the promoter could be warned that they would be responsible for event costs, such as clean up.

Chitwood: ICE lodged detainers against 7 people

Besides the guns, Chitwood provided another arrest statistic. He said deputies encountered seven people without documentation and Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) lodged detainers against them.

He said people were cited or arrested for charges such as possession of a firearm, speeding on the beach, E-bike speeding and open container.

He said some who were smoking marijuana were told to put it out but the ones that argued about it were arrested.

He said 17 juveniles who were drunk or high were processed at the Volusia County Family Resource Center and their parents were notified to come pick them up.

Chitwood said that no one in the city makes money from spring break, except probably the liquor stores. He said the crowds on the beach didn’t stay at hotels and few went into Dunkin’ or to an ice cream shop as an example. He said the crowd on Sunday was different as compared to Saturday.

“We don’t want spring break,” Chitwood said. “Spring break brings no financial benefit here.”
