The Turpins’ home looked like a normal suburban property, but behind closed doors, it was a “House of Horrors,” as described by authorities.
David and Louise Turpin were the parents of 13 children, who they abused mentally, verbally and physically for years. They chained their daughters and sons to their beds, deprived them of food and only allowed them to shower once a year.
In January 2018, 17-year-old Jordan Turpin was able to escape through a window and flee. Using her older brother’s deactivated cell phone, she dialed 911 and told the operator what she and her siblings had been subjected to.
“My parents are abusive. My two little sisters right now are chained up … they’re chained up to their bed,” Jordan said during the call. “I live in a family of 15 people and our parents are abusive. We live in filth. Sometimes I wake up and can’t breathe because of how dirty the house is.”
Later, the authorities arrived at the Turpin home and discovered a disturbing scene. The Turpin children — who at the time ranged in ages from 2 to 29 — were rescued from their abusive parents and eventually placed in foster care.
In February 2019, David and Louise pleaded guilty to 14 felony counts each, per NBC News, and in April 2019, they were sentenced to life in prison, with the possibility of parole in 25 years, according to The New York Times.
The siblings were saved from their parents, but their nightmare wasn’t over. Some were them went on to be abused by their foster family, a horrific chapter detailed in the ABC News primetime special, The Turpins: A New House of Horror, with Diane Sawyer, which aired on Feb. 3.
