The details surrounding the disappearance of Savannah Guthrie’s mother Nancy Guthrie have been coming to light after the 84-year-old Arizona native when missing over the weekend.

Authorities in Arizona say the circumstances surrounding Nancy’s disappearance have raised serious concerns, with officials describing the scene at her home as “very concerning” and confirming that a homicide team has been brought in to assist, even as the case remains classified as a search and rescue.

During a press conference on Sunday, Feb. 1, Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos said the Guthrie family told investigators that Nancy does not suffer from any cognitive impairments such as dementia.

“She’s very alert, of good, sound mind — just some physical ailments that limit her ability to move around,” Nanos said, according to NBC.

Nanos added what investigators encountered at Nancy’s home raised alarm bells, noting that the scene led authorities to involve additional resources.

“We don’t typically get the sheriff out to a scene like this, but it’s very concerning what we’re learning from the house,” Nanos said, adding that a homicide team is also investigating. “It’s not standard — typically our homicide team comes out when we have a homicide, a body. But simply by what the scene was telling us, we felt the need to bring the homicide team.”

The case is currently being described as a “search and rescue,” the sheriff said.

On Monday, Feb. 2, Savannah, 54, addressed her mother’s disappearance in a statement to the Today show, thanking supporters and law enforcement as the search continues.

“On behalf of our family, I want to thank everyone for the thoughts, prayers, and messages of support,” she said. “Right now, our focus remains on the safe return of our dear mom. We thank law enforcement for their hard work on this case.”

She went on to encourage anyone with information to contact the Pima County Sheriff’s Department at 520-351-4900.

Savannah was absent from the Today show on Monday, with Sheinelle Jones filling in for her alongside Craig Melvin, who called the situation “deeply personal” for the Today show family.

Nancy often appeared with her daughter on the NBC morning show over the years, most recently during Savannah’s hometown of Tuscon, Ariz. which aired in November 2025.

Other morning shows also reported on the incident Monday, including Good Morning America and CBS Mornings, the latter who sent their well wishes to the Guthrie family.

“Sending love to Savannah and her family and hope that this is resolved quickly and that she gets home safely,” CBS Mornings‘ Vladimir Duthiers said after their segment, his co-anchor Adriana Diaz adding, “We are praying for her.”

“I just saw the piece about Savannah’s mom,” Gayle King later noted, while calling in from Los Angeles where she was on assignment for the Grammys. “I just want to start with that to say I’m so sorry to hear this. I hope this story has a happy ending. This is very upsetting.”
