One Texas teenager died and another is in critical condition after a sledding accident in North Texas on Sunday, the Frisco Police Department said.
Police said the crash happened around 2:20 p.m. on Sunday as two 16-year-old girls were being pulled on a sled by a Jeep Wrangler driven by another 16-year-old.
Witnesses told police the girls hit a curb and collided with a tree. Both teens were taken to the hospital, where one died from her injuries. The other was in critical condition as of Sunday night.
“The Frisco Police Department extends its deepest condolences to the family and friends affected by this tragic incident. Our thoughts are with them during this difficult time,” FPD said on social media.
The incident remains under investigation, police said.
A winter storm brought ice and snow to most of Texas over the weekend, leading to icy conditions on Sunday and Monday morning.
In Austin, Mayor Kirk Watson said there was one fatality Saturday night/Sunday morning related to winter weather. A man was found unresponsive at an abandoned gas station around 6 a.m. on Sunday. Austin-Travis County EMS said “the presumed cause (of death) is hypothermia.” The Travis County Medical Examiner has not determined the cause.
